Caron One Pound question about sizing

I have used Red Heart Super Savers for years because that was available locally. But now with shipping I have other choices. And, I feel I need them.

My biggest issue is the white and black red heart yarn is two different thicknesses. Yes, they are both medium 4. I started a chess set for my grandson and the kings are different sizes. :( I never made more. Yet! (pattern link listed here if you are curious)

Anyway, I am curious if anyone has noticed a difference in sizing, or not, while using Caron One Pound.

I have had the same problem. I would suggest wich of the two is coming out smaller to go up a .5 size. Example: if it is a 5 go to a 5.5
WOW!:exploding_head: That is a awesome set!

I will go down in size before I make more, just because I use smaller hooks now, but I could adjust it from there. Just really disappointed in the red heart because of that. And … sale! <3

Definitely! Red Heart is a lighter weight worsted than Caron One Pound, in all my experience. Same with Big Twist brand’s worsted, Caron Simply Soft and Lion Brand Pound of Love, Lion Brand Heartland. Caron One Pound is larger than all of these, in my experience. As a rule of thumb, I usually only use the same brand and label for the same project because there ARE such differences in yarns. Even within the same brand! Hope this is helpful. By the way, I’ve been crocheting for 43 years and have made a study of fiber size. I started amigurumi a couple years ago a MAN!, the differences in yarn become hugely apparent really fast!!

Within the red heart brand is what got me. Hoping the Caron One Pound is better.

okay i thought i was going crazy, cause when i first started crochet i was attempting to make a patchwork cardigan as my first project (it never materialized lol) but i thought i messed something up cause all my white squares were smaller than the pink and lavender ones!

Yes. The white was smaller for my pieces also. Did you save all the squares? You could add another row and start over. I’m planning a lot of Granny square blankets this year. And sweaters.

Or maybe just do something else with the white ones.

well i actually threw out the squares, because since i had just started out, they were wider at the bottom on some, weird tension on others, and all around weren’t great. i think in gonna make a gexi granny square cardigan sometime this year though so hopefully i can redeem myself lol

Sometimes blocking them helps. Most of the time. Just for the future.

i actually got a blocking board for them, but they were so misshapen that there was no saving them (for reference i had learned how to make a stitch less than a month before starting this lol)

It’s all good. This is how we learn. Although I struggle with throwing anything away or frogging it. (Rip it rip it.) Someday you might see the sweater I’m recreating out of a top that didn’t work for me. Ha ha.

i gave some of the squares to my younger brother as “coasters” so not all went to waste lol

Different colors often have different thicknesses, especially when once is really light and the other really saturated. The darker colors are usually thicker because the dye is heavier and more saturated, even though it’s the same brand. I would size up or down your hook size to fix the issue

That makes sense I guess. I know red heart has different yarn providers too though. They changed the yellow color / texture I used for 50 years during covid and kept the same name. (with no dye lot) It messed up my tapestry bad. Oops.

I was making this custom blanket

But, half way through … I had to add a hat. :frowning:

That still looks super cool! Crazy how they switched it like that though. I had no idea
