When I was on a roll over Christmas making slippers as designed by Make Do Crew these two tools were finger/hand savers. The flexi threader handles thick yarn, and the pliers helps to pull needle through when weaving in ends.

I found with the yarn bee eternal Bliss (#7 weight) it was easier to cut a shorter tail and hand stitch it to another piece of the yarn. But I also used my pliers when my metal needle is hard to pull through.
