I don’t know if this is just me but clover amor crochet hooks are Soo bad! For 83$ for a full set is terrible compared to an 8 dollar set from Amazon that comes with metal needles and stitch marker AND some other notions. I’ve had this 8 dollar set for a year and they work super well. These clover amor crochet hooks are not smooth and wayyyy overpriced.
They come with 10 stitch markers, 8 taspestry needles, a cable twister and a tape measure + case
Honestly I have bought 2 sets of ergonomic hooks and one set of plain metal hooks. One of the ergonomic sets is from Amazon (it came as a crochet kit for like $13) and the one from temu (10 hooks for like $8). The metal hooks just came from a random craft store locally (2.5mm-6.75mm set).
The ones from Amazon I’ve had for a year and they work good, feel good in my hand and help my hands not cramp. Only downside is the hook slides out of the silicone grip (big deal they were cheap and have lasted). The ones I bought off temu I just got like 2 days ago and are just as good as the Amazon ones. The metal ones were pretty cheap, have lasted like 4 years and you can find them anywhere.
Now im not saying metal hooks are inferior and nobody should buy them. However when i crochet i love to sit down with my favorite show and crochet for a few hours. If I use and ergonomic hook it just feels so much better on my hands afterwards. Not as much soreness or cramping compared to a metal hook.
As a beginner any hook will do. You dont need a fancy grip or something that cost $15 a hook. Whatever is in your price range will work. Metal hooks are awesome for someone just starting out with crocheting and are generally budget friendly.
Another thing is most of the time you buy a set of hooks and only use a few (i normally use mostly 4mm-6mm). So its not really worth it to buy a big set of expensive hooks just to use a few of them.
I’ve gotten ergonomic hooks from the thrift store, metal hooks from Walmart, and plastic hooks from the dollar store, and I actually prefer the plastic hooks. I do like the ergonomic ones but since they came from the thrift store there was no 5mm which is the one I use the most, and I find that I have to hold the metal hook tighter because it’s more slippery so it makes my hand cramp more than my plastic ones.
I have had metal hooks for years, I was gifted a set with the silicon handles, not name brand, but the handles feel gummy to me and I just dont like that feel. I did purchase 2 off brand resin hooks in the 2 sizes I use the most and I do like them, although I did have to file a rough spot off the one, but they work really well, but I do think I crochet faster with the cheap metal ones.
IMO, with ergonomic handles, I think they are too bulky, and they don’t feel good in my hands. I started learning to crochet with metal hooks and i can tell when they are good quality and when they are not. In my experience, the ergonomic ones hurt my hand more because im trying to find a good way to grip them. But i will never force metal hooks onto anybody. Its their choice.
I use homebrand silicone handle hooks from my local craft store and overall they’re pretty good (I also tried a cheap set from Amazon but the handle material feels really unpleasant, so I wouldn’t recommend them). The problem is that over time the handle starts slipping, and then wearing away if you use them a lot (for reference, my hooks are about 5 years old). Recently my poor worn out favourite hook burst through the bottom of the handle, so I finally replaced it with a high quality one from the Tulip brand that hopefully won’t wear away.
I think the expensive brands make sense for those that crochet a lot and need something more durable, but I wouldn’t get a full set of them. Just whichever size you use the most.
I have both clovers and the ones off Amazon plus some off Ali express. Anything that has the rubber on its handle eventually the rubber pulls or slides off while I crochet. However I’ve had good drag on all of them.
I dont use my clovers as much as the other ones.
Please do not, I will post the explanation
It has come to my attention that some people are buying their yarn from temu. This could be dangerous as they are known to use chemicals that can be very harmful to both the workers in the factory and people using their products. These are often illegal in the countries they export to. They are also highly suspected of modern slavery, and steal artists designs to sell. They also use ai image generation for many or their products, particularly to create unrealistic products to scam people. This may not affect you, but someone with sight issues or dementia or anything like that could easily be duped, particularly as AI gets better at image generation every day. They are known to sell crochet items, crochet cannot be done with a machine meaning they are using human labour. This may not sound bad at first but with their poor reputation for treatment of workers, this points to likely many overworked and underpaid individuals who could easily develop permanent injuries. This is the same with SHIEN too and SHEIN has been repeatedly found to have the same issues and has caused dangerous situations through lack of care packaging,I will not go into this research it yourself. I can’t control what you do but remember:If it seems too good to be true it probably is.
