Color changing in rows? (Please help)

For context: I’m making a Tomioka giyu (water hashira from demon slayer) kimono/cardigan. The part I need help with is the half that has the diamond pattern. (Picture below)

I have the red half of the back panel done. I’m needing help with the color changing though. I have never done color changing in rows, let alone tapestry crochet. What I’m looking for is a clean color change, one that doesn’t take a bunch of yarn if that makes sense, like less yarn tails less yarn wastage is what it would be (I think?). I was wondering if anyone knew any ways/techniques I could use for it, and fits my needs as much as possible. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

I would look into tapestry/intarsia crochet!! There are ways to weave your yarn as you work so you aren’t left with so many ends or the floating yarn on the back side of your piece.

I can dm you the pattern I’m coming up for it if it works out, this is my first time making a cardigan and I’m freehanding it :grimacing: I have done all the stuff I was worried about and came up with a plan for the pattern. If all goes well I can dm it to you

Depending on how many colours are needed in a row, I usually carry my yarn and swap colours when needed (if there’s one I don’t need for the next two rows, I carry it up the side).

I also came across this recently, which I think is an interesting technique for avoiding tails:

oooh kay, i have this way, but the back of your cardigan is going to be a MESS. basically, i use this for banners/tapestry, and when u colour change normally, for the next colour change, you drag the end at the back of the project to where you need that certain colour. sorry, idk if i’m making sense. tell me if u need pics, and i’ll try my best!
