ohhhh ok! <3
I know that a lot of people in India crochet and ship it here. They are getting paid but since everything in India is SO cheap it is actually worth it for them. I saw something that said you could buy a full day of meals for $2.
Not sure if that is true though.
I think that we should not assume anything and not be against Hobby Lobby because of this.
Iām indian. I went to India in December. they use rupees so yes everything is worth less than america but they also earn less, and things will be like 1000 rupees which is normal ish
So was that thing I saw true? They can just spend less so they are making money?
what do you mean
I canāt stop going to hobby lobby cus everything else is overpriced! But Iāve never seen them at mineā¦,
Same, and they have all the yarn i need and itās on sale every other week. Michaels is way overpriced and my Joanās only carries fabric and jewelry making stuff
I dont like that. Rather it is mimicked or real crochet, I think it takes away from those who put in the work.
Iām not sure of the percentage now, but in 2021 81.80% of the people in India were making less than $5.50 a day.
Just because itās cheap there to us doesnāt mean theyāre making a lot of money overall.
Say they make $5 and spend $2 a day on food, thatās like making $140 a day (the average in America) and spending $60 a day on food for one person.
For reference the average person in America spends $12 on groceries and $9 on eating out a day
Iām gonna be honest with you, the only yarn I ever bought from hobby lobby was acrylic yarn. Itās very unfortunate that large stores like these are selling underpriced pieces of art for such a cheap price. Itās devistating, especially because hobby lobby is the crafting paradise for most people.
Just so everyone knows, Target is another store that is doing this type of thing as well. Targets is specifically clothes, which, if anyone knows how much crochet clothing goes for (itās a lot-), they are EXTREMELY underpriced. I saw a crochet cardigan from there for around $20 I believe one day, and there have been others like Walmart, Target, and now Hobby Lobby unfortunately.
Just so you know be REALLY carful about making assumptions about this type of stuff BECAUSE (I have watched some vids about this) companies purposefully do machine knitting techniques that closely resemble crochet
@Smallpandafries @TheForestFrog to answer yalls questions real quick:
these were, upon inspection, 100% handmade. and its not just this. its the blatant use of ai in pretty much anything with art on it and the fact that hobby
lobby, from what ive seen, is very homophobic.
and to everything else - there are lower priced options. micheals is kind of iffy, but joanns is a solid choice (and in collqboration with ribblr.) also, many brands you would get at hobby lobby have their own websites!
I used to love hobby lobby until i realize how toxic they are.
Ok thanks for clarifying i know that their homophobic and they have as been antisemitic and I chose not to shop there for those reasons and now because of the other reason you brought up
Also if your looking for an in depth video about hobby lobby Aspen in the moment has a good one
Yeah, hobby lobby isnāt great. I stopped going there because theyāre homophobic, but I guess hereās another reason not to shop there. That really sucks, people need to be paid for the work they do.
Ahhh yes I seen the tulips they started putting out a couple weeks ago! I told my mom I could make them. I refuse to buy anythimg crocheted in the store. $5 each is about how much I sold some roses for 2 years ago when I crocheted them. Its sad to see a store selling them higher than i did.
Did something happenā¦?..I feel like this is a lot of hate to Hobby Lobby when you donāt actually know the whole storyā¦
but also because people will just buy them at hobby lobby where they machine knit them for a lower price instead of actual crochet small businesses where we cannot afford to sell them that low
