Easy first crochet projects?

After much begging from my niece, I finally decided to teach her to crochet but I’m having trouble finding and picking a good first project for her. She’s 7 so it needs to be absolute beginner level. I plan to teach her to ch, sc, hdc and working in the round at least. Please drop your project suggestions below or if there’s anything else I should teach her first. Thanks!

You could start out with the classic square, so she can learn chains, sc , and maybe even hdc doing that. Maybe in learning how to work in the round, you could show her how to make a magic circle or just the chain 2 method and have her do just like a couple rounds, and then keep doing it over and over again.

Those are some small ideas you could use, and even with the working in rounds, you can maybe show her how to make a small ball, once she gets a little further along.

Hope this helps you and her out a least a little bit!!

Leggy frogs! I feel like this is a great first project after learning how to do the basics like increasing, decreasing, single crochet, etc. This project also gives her a great way to practice all the basic stitches and some new ones like the bobble stitch. This was also my first project as a beginner. I’m now making so much more complicated things.

octopuses and leggy frogs are great! most amigurumi won’t include hdc though, unless it’s for a specific appendage… so not sure about that.
