Hey, so I actually just finished testing my first pattern and am ready to release it but wasn’t sure if Etsy or here is better for it , I wanna make sure people are able to find it easily and I know Etsy probably helps that but again I’m all new to it
If it’s paid honestly it might sell better in Etsy
Etsy is good for pdfs and such.
Here on Ribblr, you’ll have to type (or copy/paste) and edit the pattern into the ribbuild platform.
I’ve heard that Etsy has high fees and there’s been a lot of backlash due to Etsy supporting ai patterns (personally, I’m avoiding it if I start selling).
The downside of Ribblr is the younger audience here not being able to buy patterns.
That giraffe is very cute!
You are able to see pictures from ribblr through googoe
There’s also Raverly if you want to look at that
So for etsy you have to deal with being GPSR compliant or opt out of selling to the EU and Northern Ireland. Ribblr has been deemed exempt due to its digital only nature (no pdf). Etsy is also known for pattern theft and having patterns put on giant bundles with hundreds of stolen patterns.
Although Etsy does have a lot of traffic, you have to perfect your SEO to be seen and put at the top of the search list. Or you can pay for them to advertise for you.
You could always put it on both sites
In addition to the issues already mentioned, Etsy’s AI can wrongly flag your patterns as copyrighted or fake. I know several creators who had their listings removed for weeks or even months after scammers stole their images and reposted them. Etsy hasn’t done much to fix this.
That said, you can still list on Etsy, here, and even Ravelry. The more platforms you’re on, the more visibility you get, though each has its downsides. I personally caution against Etsy now. It’s no longer a hub for handmade goods but is filled with drop shippers, scammers, and people using AI to steal from real artists.
No matter which platform you choose, success depends on marketing. I sold on Etsy for years, and the only consistent sales I made came from promoting myself outside the platform on social media or at markets. That’s the real key, regardless of where you sell.
You could do both
