for the florists

hiya guyss

I recently found a shop that has a ton of flower patterns, and I’ve crocheted a few tiny roses (like two…) and I was wondering how you guys cover wires you use for flowers you crochet.

I’ve done one flower where I just wrapped yarn all the way around the wires so they were covered, but that’s a big yarn waste for someone who doesn’t have a job and can’t freely buy yarn lol

I’ve thought about felt as an option but also have no idea how to do that too so i was wondering what other people do!

That’s all!

If you mean the stems, I wrap them with the yarn, my rule of thumb is 3 times longer than the dowel, and I unroll as I wrap to make a smoother surface, it’s not as yarn wasting as you might think, especially on wires since they’re thinner than the dowels I use. It’s relatively little yarn in comparison to the flower itself.

From experience, I prefer wooden sticks and skewers instead of wire for stems. You do lose the ability to model the stem but unless your wire is really sturdy they just bend by themselves, blooms can get pretty heavy once you get bigger…

Have a comparison 🫳

Marigolds- wire stems, kept bending A LOT

Dahlias- dowels, and Lily- dowel
Sturdy but impositionable

You could try crepe paper, it’s usually relatively cheap and you can stretch it out. I have yet to try that but I don’t think I will, I’m pretty satisfied with yarn wrapping.

I also prefer yarn color-wise since it matches the leaves and sepals better, if the same yarn is used.

Thank you for your patience

aahh okay i see i seeee the ted talk awas very helpful actually. I thought wrapping wires with yarn and all was a little more wasting but good to know it isn’t!

dowels also seem really smart actually! the sturdiness looks a little bit better in the vase to me, so maybe i’ll try both!

your flowers are also so pretty omg..

I just take your typical dollar store bamboo dowels, if you want more volume you can always add some random yarn scraps of the length inside or something else… Don’t use pipe cleaners, the fluff peeks out :anxious_face_with_sweat:

pipe cleaners seem pretty thin anyways lol but also good to know! i didn’t know dollar store necessarily had dowels like that (the only place i’ve seen them or paid attention to them is michael’s..) how would you attach the flower head to the dowel?

I usually use hot glue and the pointy end, depends totally on the flower tho-

The lilies are made by wrapping yarn around the flower centre, building out-
You start with your dowel, and pistil, then wrap em good (3 reps), add pistils, 3 reps, add petals reps… So on, so you build the entire bloom on the dowel

Dahlias-
These have a different centre-

The start is a mr 6 hdc, then 6 sc up top, it makes this little bump, that’s really useful to get a dab of hot glue in and then the dowel to follow inside, holds it really well.

If there’s wire in the flower itself it’s crocheted over, if it shows your tension/hook size are off

Also the further you get into flowers, the more tunisian appears since it’s super useful for making petals, if you’re thinking of seriously taking up flowers I suggest also practicing making little squares and rectangles in Tunisian, you don’t need a special hook, there’s usually little enough loops to fit on a hook with a handle, I haven’t had such an issue yet.
