Help please (whale shark)

I’m making a whale shark for a friends birthday soon, and I seen this little one (picture below)


And I was wondering how I would make the mouth open like that without having to crochet in the chains like that if that makes sense. It would be in the round (magic circle) and I was wondering if I could make it up to the point where I want the mouth, then chain a number of how wide I want the mouth and go on from there fishing the body then crocheting around that whole and pushing it in so the mouth is open. Would that work?

pretty sure i know how, you would want to make the body, and instead of closing it, you would make like a section to put your finger in and sew that to the mouth
