Help! Teaching Crochet at a kids Holiday camp

Hi Everyone!

I need some help - I’ve been asked to run a crochet session for about an hour at a kids holiday camp for 4-11 year olds. This is my first time doing anything like this, so I’m wondering if anyone has an idea of what I could teach them that they would enjoy/ be easy to teach in an hour? If anyone has any patterns or ideas (and advice :joy:) that would be great!

Thanks guys!

I’d teach them just to make like a swatch, then maybe give them like a printed pattern that uses the stitches you taught them

So I had this idea that’s kind of like a pet rock. You could have them make a circle and then put cute eyes on them and hair or something like that. They could all add a little personality to their circles. Plus circles are pretty basic and quick

I think that for kids, animals would be fun! so maybe a 10 inute octopus by sweet sfties? they have basic shapes, and use lots of techniques like magic ring, increase, decrease, ch, sl st, and closing a hole!

If they are completely new to crochet I would suggest having the piece pre-started (magic circle or chain/first row).
Learning takes time and this will cause less frustration and make it more fun for that age group in such a short amount of time.
I have been teaching my 9 year old. She has made 2 complete toys (bee and dog) but still needs help with those starts.

Another option is just teaching a chain (since they are a great learning point) and then they can turn it into art. (I put a picture below to show what I am talking about. I found it online and do not take credit for the picture.)
This would work for even the littles and it can be as simple or complex as they want. Realistically a 4 year old will not be able to do the same as an 11 year old (typically).

This also give them the chance to bring home a completed project for themselves or a possible gift.
