Help with quilting

Heyyy! Please can someone help me out. As expected I have thrown myself into the deep end. This is my first real sewing project and I have no idea what I am doing ( I have done a few smaller things but mainly to practise using a machine because I had never touched one prior).

So basically I want to make myself a saddle pad ( it’s for horses and it acts as a cushioning for the horse’s saddle on their back) it involves 4 layers of batting sandwiched between cotton material. The problem is there is not much information online about sewing saddle pads or even sewing with 4 layers of batting. So I kinda winged it and it backfired horribly.

I think I have mainly had problems with tension because the top thread seem to be poking through the bottom side so much so that the thread that comes form the bobbin does not even penetrate the material if that makes sense( forgive me but I do not know any sewing terms). I’ve been playing around with the settings on the sewing machine to try and find the sweet spot for the tension and stitch length but I have no idea what I am doing. I also had problems where the tread bunched at the bottom and got stuck in the machine at times. I googled and apparently it’s because the batting slipped but I’m not sure how to fix that because there are so many layers of batting so will I still be able to pin it?

I would love some tips and tricks about how to pin your projects best, the best tension and stitch length. Oh and also I would love to know about that foot thing where the needle is, because I’m not sure if maybe changing it will help make my life easier. Please just info dump I really don’t mind I would love to learn as much as possible. Also I don’t know if this makes a difference but I’m using my mom’s ancient singer confidence 7463 machine

Here’s what a saddle pad looks like to give you an idea

For the batting slipping, you can get spray adhesive to spray on each layer so they don’t move around.

You should be able to find long pins to go through all the layers. You could also use paper clips/claws to hold the edges.

There are different feet that might help but Im drawing a blank on the names.

Im currently on lunch/on my phone, but I can do more research/give more information later.

Its been years since I quilted, but one thing I remember about the bunching on bottom was due to the bottom fabric getting caught/not being able to move. I believe you should be able to adjust the height of the teeth that move the fabric.
