Hey I’m new to sewing! Y’all got any tips?

Hi y’all, I just started sewing and would like some tips from y’all. So far I’ve made 3 makeup bags and 2 scrunchies and a bookmark.
Thanks in advance!

What would you like to make ? Clothes ? My general advice is to take things slow. You don’t need to cut the pattern, the fabric, and sew everything in one day. Spread the tasks on multiple days and don’t settle for “that will do”: if you made a mistake, take the time to undo it or it may create other issues later.
Also: always press your seams, it truly makes the difference in terms of looks and structure!

If you have a specific project in mind, I can give you other, less general, tips

You can absolutely start sewing by hand. It takes more time/dedication/precision, but you can make pieces that are just as amazing (or even more!) as machine-sewed ones! Couture clothes are hand-sewn for the most part, for instance. What would you like to make, specifically?

Idk a heart plushie?

Sounds like a great beginner project!

The easiest way would be to make a felt plushie. Felt is very stable, doesn’t stretch, doesn’t fray, and there’s no direction to it. It’s perfect for smaller projects. You simply cut a heart shape twice and sew both pieces together with a blanket stitch, stuffing before you’re done stitching all around.
If you want to add eyes and a mouth, you’ll have to do it before assembling both sides of the heart.

There are tones of tutorials on youtube!

Nice! I can’t see your stitches but it looks like it went well. The corners could be sharper, but that’s difficult to achieve even with a machine, so you did well (especially with this fabric, not easy!)
There are many stitches you can learn: straight stitch, backstitch, ladder stitch, blanket stitch, etc. The toughest part is to get the tension right and make your stitches regular. With a bit of practice, you can make anything you want

Thanks I used a towel my mom gave me to practice the sewing:sob:

I’m currently working on an apron

In that case, besides the general tips like wash and iron your fabric before cutting, you could look up specific techniques to get a neat finish. For instance, if you’re using bias tape, look up “sewing bias tape in ditch”, it’s a lot neater than topstitching. Depending on the design, you could look up how to sew a curved hem or mitred corners.

Basically, at every step of the sewing process, you can google “how to…” instead of guessing how to do it, even if it seems easy to figure out on your own. This way, you’ll discover a lot of techniques to improve your project. Can you figure out how to sew a button on your own? Yes! But if you google it, you’ll find out about “shanks” and “knotless starts”, which wouldn’t have crossed your mind otherwise
