How do you secure yarn in center of yarn ball?

I got a yarn winder recently which I love, but am finding that as I am working with the yarn, inevitably the tail at beginning of the yarn in the center somehow makes it way out of the center and gets tangled or makes yarn barf.

this is mostly happening with size 1 yarn, so that’s probably a factor.

Part of my process is I’ll transport the yarn on a yarn holder in my crochet bag, so it’s going from vertical to horizontal and sometimes the yarn goes under the spool so I gotta lift up the spool thingy to detangle it. (I’m realizing that part of my issue may be the transporting and spool tangling).

Anyway - how do you secure the yarn in the center? (Assuming you work from the outside tail).

A Hair snap clip

Bread clip (won’t work on the small yarn)

Weave the end lightly under 2-5 other yarn wind string

Wind it over a empty toilet paper roll and wedge the thread between the edge of the toilet paper roll twist

Thanks for these ideas! I the TP trick seems easiest for me - and probably best for the size 1 yarn.

I use a tp roll with a slit at cut into one end that I slide the yarn tail into
