I’m new to crocheting, any tips?
youtube is really good to learn most of the stiches
Woobles kits are really good for beginners! You can buy them at joanns for $30, a bit pricey I know but they are worth it, trust me! (:
Put a stitch marker or safety pin in your loop if you put your work down so it doesn’t unravel if someone touches it
I taught myself everything of crochet and picked up really fast! I suggest, starting off small. Maybe with a granny square first. Youll learn double crochet & get pratice in. If you can do a dc , youll be able to do all the stitches. I made a granny square bag as my first project. What i was thinking But im 2 years in now and i love it!
Tips:
︎Practice Granny Squares. You could always practice in rounds. Maybe do 2 rounds of sc , next 2 rounds hdc, then dc
︎Dont get stressed out! Crocheting is fun not a chore. Keep practicing
︎Keep a yarn needle on hand! Never cut your ends. Weave them in to your work and then back through to secure.
︎If you make somthing, and dont love it. Just un do the yarn and reuse it to make something else. So many people cut their projects, i dont. Haha i sit and un do it all
if you don’t want to do a granny square like the comment above me suggest, you could try amigurumi, or plushies. that’s how i started and some are quite simple
i learnt it from youtube videos, and i think a good youtuber is Crochet with Mahaum (idk how to spell her name sorry and idek if that’s the correct youtuber name ) but i think it’s just… hold the yarn comfortably, i used to hold it in a weird way and it hurt my finger SO MUCH.
depending on what you’re trying to make, whether it’s amigurumi or hats, what stitches you’ll need to know will be different. i think it’s good to start with the basics, figure out what yarn and hook you like working with, know what stitches mean what, and figure out what you’re comfortable with making! for your first project, i would recommend making a beanie, or something small if you’re starting with amigurumi.
in the end, it’s just important that you’re comfortable with how you’re crocheting, and know that not everything will come out perfect! i believe in you!
It might be annoying, but I highly recommend counting your stitches at the end of every row. That way if you make a mistake, you only have to unravel one row to fix it.
At least you guys have the advantage of having YouTube available to learn from. The internet was not around when I started. The neighbor tried to teach me but claimed I was holding the hook wrong. So at ten years of age or so I picked up my father’s copy of the reader’s digest complete guide to needlework (still own that copy and I think it is still being published) yes Amazon has it, Amazon.com. Looks exactly like my copy, same cover
Back when I learned books and magazines were it unless someone was around that could teach you in person
