I have started crocheting seriously over a year and a half ago. As a student who is needing more money and wants to be financially independent and responsible, I need to find a way to make money. So, I looked at my hobby and decided to do a little research on how to turn my passion into money.
I think I should design and sell patterns here on Ribblr (maybe Etsy) like the rest of you guys. However, I’ve never done something like this where I invest a lot of time my time into crocheting and designing, especially as the school year rises and I have a lot of work.
I’ve already created some pattern ideas, a few sketches and notes. I don’t know how I can freestyle them and turn my sketches into a physical plush. Can you guys give me a few tips on how to make money off of selling patterns?
I have no idea how to create my own pattern good enough for me, let alone good enough to sell and make profit. I have looked at a bunch of shops here, and I’ve thought, “How can these patterns be so cute and good, while being able to actually make money?” I’m not that good a crocheting on my own. For 80% of my projects, I use a pattern. But I’m motivated to step out of my comfort zone and try to design a pattern.
I’ve already taken a few steps. I’ve brainstormed ideas and made a clear sketch of what I’m going to do. I was thinking of creating bundles and patterns that are unique (I’ve made sure that my ideas are unique by searching them here) and are a reflection of what I love. Like a sushi bundle or favorite characters bundle.
The only thing that I’m scared about is designing the pattern (turning my ideas into something real) and marketing it to make some actual money. I hope my business can be seen by this lovely community, and I can continue to grow my passion.
I would deeply appreciate it if you guys could give me some tips on how to design patterns, how to market my patterns, if it’s worth my time and labor, and if it’s a reliable side gig that you can make money off of, even if the business isn’t famous. I just want to express my passion and creativity through crochet, while also making some money to survive through school (lol).
I’m so grateful I found this community where people understand each other, have the same interests, and where I can learn from! Thanks so much in advance.
