Iâve done Pikachu, Evee, my daughter did Snorlax and PokĂ© ball
Disclaimer I am not a lawyer, just a cautious crafter who has read a lot about this.
No, not under US copyright law. Look at it like this, if you can look at a pattern/make for sale and tell itâs meant to be Squirtle, it doesnât matter what you call it, itâs violating copyrights unless you have permission from PokĂ©mon.
Everyone who sells patterns or makes of a trademarked character is infringing on the rights of the company who owns that trademark. If youâre lucky theyâll never notice and youâll fly under the radar. If youâre unlucky theyâll send you a cease and desist letter. If youâre very unlucky theyâll sue you as @Garnknuten mentioned above.
If you never profit from it youâll probably be fine. As you know copyright infringing products are super common in the craft world. But both Nintendo/Pokemon and Disney are especially known for strict enforcement of their rights.
Hereâs an article that goes into more detail for anyone whoâs interested in making sure their hard-built business wonât be taken away with one cease and desist letter.
Can I Crochet Licensed Characters and Sell Them? - CrochetKimâą.
And hereâs one that talks about the ethical implications:
Again, disclaimer, I am not giving legal advice, just telling you what my understanding is of USA copyright law regarding crochet, and itâs basically donât sell things you donât own the rights to. Thatâs why I always advise people to work on developing their own designs rather than copying something else.
OMG!! II canât wait for the pattern to be released! (if u will release it ofc) Idk if u will be allowed tho, becuase of all that discussion above about copyright and stuff
