Hii!
I already know how to crochet and I tried some nalbinding before. Now I’d like to learn how to knit but honestly…I have no idea where to start…
What are the best stitches to learn as an absolute beginner?
Any tips that could be helpful?
What was your first project when you were learning how to knit?
Anything you wish you knew from the start?
Share your experience and your first projects pictures! I’d love to see them c:
I personally just dive head in and hope for the best
I suggest finding a small pattern you want to make, or if you just want to practice you can just make some swatches. (There are TONS of free patterns on ravelry you can go through)
Your “need to know” skills:
how to cast on (I mostly use the long tail cast on method)
how make knit and purl stitches (they are the base of everything)
how to cast off (use a crochet hook, its SOOOO much quicker)
how to seam (basically how to mattress stitch edges together).
And for stitches you come across and don’t know (like the many ways to increase or decrease), youtube has a ton of video tutorials on practically all stitches.
If you are a crocheter, I suggest learning how to knit continental. There are two styles of how to hold your yarn (continental and english), and I as a crocheter find continental to be far more familiar. And continental is also generally faster.
My first project was Claire Garland’s Knitted frog and I sm currently making her Mole pattern.
I started learning how to knit about 2 years ago. I used a lot of Youtube tutorials. I started with washclothes/dishclothes. There is a couple of ways to cast on/start the yarn onto the needles before doing the stitches, I found the long tail cast on the easiest for me. So your first video should be a cast on video. Once you get the yarn cast on, then you start the stitches
Bookmarking! I have been trying to look uo knitting, but haven’t found anything half as helpful as y’all! I didn’t know that I had to alternate my rows, I didn’t know there was different casting on. I only knew there were different types of knitting, and I was confused why different videos showed me different casting on.
