I want to open an online shop, but...

Its exactly as the header says, but should I start with an etsy and a social media, or go right into a shopify website? Please tell me your advice if you have one or the other!

hii!! definitely start with etsy + socials, as shopify is better for when you have a solid buyer base!!!

With etsy, you might get some natural traffic but a shopify shop requires 100% of your own marketing. Maybe you can start with etsy and migrate away from that a little later:yellow_heart:

Yes good advice from. Other ribblrs … if you start with shopify you could have the fanciest website in the world with amazing things but none knows its there unless you market it… also you have to deal with taxes yourself etc so you need to look into that yrself , there’s also eu rules about packaging and all stuff like that whatever platform you sell on … but with etsy taxes are collected for you, they do lots of marketing for you and have lots of free forums / coaching etc eg etsy-up to show you the ropes. Your own marketing to etsy will still help and share scheme saves you on fees a bit but with seo keywords etc you can get some sales on etsy even if you’re unknown . You can always have afree website and your shop link be your etsy shop. You can add etsy shop to your Instagram to create shoppable posts and yes the fees are a bit steep if you sell… but on 20c for 3mths per listing the rest of the fees only cost if you sell something.

If you want to offer an alternative to wtsg with cheaper fees, then ribblr… though your audience will be makers and designers rather than general public, or why bit do etsy, free website plus payhip. Payhip deals with taxes, you can have a shop front for digital and physical products and create your own affiliate scheme too to help your marketing.

All of the above… you can add on yr insta links

etsy is really good if you have a lot of sales, but if not I did a lot of research and I found out that they take a lot of your money even when you dont sell much

Well they take the 20c but other fees only if you make sales, but say you listed 10 patterns and accrued $2 listing fees, but only sold one $5 pattern etsy will take the $2 you owe for the 10 listings plus the 20c to relist pattern you sold plus the fees for the sold pattern, so when you sell your first item it can seen like a lot… but you only get charged the listing fee every 3months , so if you then sold another $5 pattern the following week it would charge you the selling fees on that pattern plus 20c relist fee on just the one you sold. So yeah if you’re not selling regularly the fees might outweigh the sales especially if you have lots of listings but no sales. But it can be a good place to sell especially if you drive teaffic to your etsy via your socials/blogs/in person events xx
