When I use DK yarn, I try to use a lighter tension.

Maybe a different size or type of hook or go a bit slower

I highly recommend going up a hook size, I had terrible issues with the splitting, but once I went up a size, I got considerably better results. I still manage very tight tension and clean stitches, even using a larger hook (I also use a tension ring to help keep my yarn on the correct tension, works like a charm for me).

Use a different yarn.
