Is this wrong ?

So most pattern have the little thing that days do not copy/paste/translate patterns.

However i like to print mine because looking back and forth at a screen strains my eyes due to severe astigmatism.

Many of my patterns are crammed with pics and very wordy instructions. One i have is a pdf with 74 pages.
I cant afford that much ink. And people like to have colored backgrounds so it makes most unprintable for small makers like me. My printer is old as dirt.

Is it wrong to re-type it in condensed instructions (i got the 74 page down to 12 printed pages) ONLY for my personal binder? I never post any or share with anyone.

Ive been struggling inside myself wondering if its wrong in general? Or if its ok because im not posting or sharing the retyped version?

EDIT: Thank you all for your replies! Im glad im not the only one who does this, and like i said i never share them!
It makes me feel better knowing that its ok to do for my own personal use and comfort. this community is was nicer and more understanding than facebook ones :smiling_face_with_tear:

I want to do the same thing! I like to have written-down tutorials so I can watch TV or yt while I crochet, but a lot of patterns ARE yt vids. Can I write them down? Can I not? It’s a huge problem for me. I’m sure there are other people with the same question, so we should prolly push this post.

I dont think its wrong. If you are only doing it for personal use, I see no reason why you shouldn’t.

I write the pattern down. In my mind, they posted it as a video tutorial, so they do make money on it. I realize that the goal of posting a tutorial is that ppl will buy the written pattern. But I know that some ppl will make a rule for themselves that they cant use a tutorial more than 3 times without buying th written pattern. I’ve never boughten a pattern that is available for free in another place, simply because I have such a small business.

if you bought the pattern, it is yours (to an extent) printing for PERSONAL use is perfectly fine :ok_hand:t3::+1:t3::sparkles:

As long as you don’t post it in any way and it’s only for personal use, it’s fine!

I do that too, just don’t share it and your fine.

You are purchasing the PDF right?

Most of the ones I use don’t have a link to a written pattern ANYWHERE.

As long as you don’t sell it or show it to others, I think it’s fine.

I was given a handwritten copy of a knitted baby sweater, I actually used Microsoft Excel to write a chart for it, but I don’t think I have the file anymore. I’ve knitted a bunch of them. I’ve never shown it to anyone. I don’t know who the original designer is, someone I know online sent me the handwritten copy.

I write patterns down aswell, i noticed my screentime is very high so i do it on paper.

I honestly don’t think anything is wrong about it , aslong as u don’t share it

I personally would say that is fine, because you’re not reposting as your own or taking anything away from the maker. I don’t see a problem with making accommodations to make it easier for you.

The point of the no copy etc rule thing is to prevent patterns being shared to others without permission from the designer (especially to prevent paid patterns being shared elsewhere for free). If you really only use it for yourself, then you’re not violating the spirit of that rule. But only if you really don’t share your personal pattern binder with others. And maybe just make sure you include the name of the shop/person you got each pattern from, so that you can direct others there if they ask where you got a pattern? Idk. Just don’t share them around without consent from the designer!

That and the free ones. Because i can’t go back and forth looking at a screen

I would never claim someone elses work as my own. Only the product of it i put my own time into.
I have a discord where i share the things i make with my friends. (The toy, never the pattern). I dont have any crochet buddies in there except 1.
Im aiming to be more confident in sharing my toys i make. Ill happily direct anyone to the pattern. I have an excel sheet with the pattern, author and site i got them from if anyone asks! Im prepared.

I feel much better about how i use the patterns now. I was so worried i was doing something wrong all the time

Yeah I do it with free ones, i’ve only bought a pattern once. I will copy and paste into documents that I keep to myself.

If it is personal use only - It shouldn’t be wrong - It’s no different than buying a pattern and making notes in the margins. If you have the pattern or youTube video available and it helps you - it should be ok. BUT it means strictly personal use - I wouldn’t even give a copy of my work to my best friend. It is copy righted and personal use means Personal Use!
