There’s a pattern i want to try, but like all the parts have posable wire in it so it stands and the wings are up and majestic. Ive been crocheting for over 17 years but never used wire before.
This is the pattern in question : https://www.etsy.com/listing/1815057309/selene-the-skeletal-dragon-amigurumi
I’d say it isn’t “hard”, although it can be a lot more time-consuming
Thank you! Its always kind of hard to take the next step once youre comfortable with your current skills
Yeah, good luck with it though! That pattern looks really cool
Thanks!
I know it looks so boss. I have 4 requests for it but the wire be making me nervous aha
i’m relatively new to crocheting but i’ve tried using pipe cleaners before! it was relatively easy, you just have to work around the wire part really.
oh but a protip is not to overstuff so that the piece can maintain the same shape as the wire! i stuffed my tail too much and had to sew it down in the end to make it stop uncurling itself
I’ve used pipe cleaners as well to help keep florals up right. But this is like thick wire. Not easily bendy like pipe cleaners, but still movable
Wires can be tricky, but are typically worth it. I say go for it!
Im gonna try! Just need to order the right wire
It can be a pain sometimes but it’s totally worth it in my opinion. I’ve done the Crafty Intentions dragon patterns before and they use wire in the body and wings. You just need to be a little more patient with it.

Shopping for wire is hard!
I’ve done it before for flowers and for a dragon, and it’s not too hard. You just have to remember to fold the ends of your wire pieces so that they don’t poke through the stuffing and crochet fabric. A good pair of pliers helps to fold it flat.
I believe this is the wire I used for the dragon, though I may be mistaken: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cousin-20G-Silver-Copper-Wire-24/40775640?fulfillmentIntent=Pickup&filters=[{“intent”%3A"fulfillmentIntent"%2C"values"%3A[“Pickup”]}]&classType=VARIANT&from=/search
I used jewelry wire, but it does need to be a heavy wire like you said to hold the shape and I second that you need to bend the ends so they dont poke through and a good set of jewelry pliers will make bending it a whole lot easier
Thanks ! I’m gonna order in bulk because i need to make at least 4 of them.
I like to wrap my wire in electric tape. Its more annoying to work with to be sure but Ive had a wire snap inside before and it was super annoying. I don’t 100% know the tape would stop it but at least if it did snap the ends would be less likely to poke out. Good luck, once you start adding wire you’ll wonder why everything doesnt have it because it makes everything so bendy and fun.
I worked with wire multiple times. It takes longer as others stated because you have to move your work around more and move your wire out of the way.
I recently finished a greyhound that had a complete wire frame and an now working on a centaur with a wire frame. For those I am using 12 guage insulated wire. It is coated so I do not need to worry about it breaking.
It also helps to wrap your ends, after bending, with cloth medical tape. The friction makes it harder for it to poke out.
Also have more wire than you think you need. That way if yours is bigger than theirs you will still have enough.
Good luck. Now I want to make that dragon too.
Thanks so much! It was (maybe still is!) On sale for 60% iff on etsy! So i only paid 2.60. It’s been in my cart for ages! I always wait for sales. (:
Cant wait to do it. Just need to pick up some wire
I’ve crocheted with wire, using it just like yarn. I’ve made necklaces, stringing beads on the wire as I Freeform crocheted them (no pattern). Wire is hard on the hands and wrists. Plus it bent up one metal crochet hook (size 7, for thread crochet)
