Jury Duty Crochet Withdrawal

For the next two weeks I am on call for jury duty. I have to call every night to see if I need to report the next day. In the instructions, it says when you come to not bring anything that could be used as a weapon like knitting needles. I actually called in to see if a crochet hook would be allowed and was told they aren’t allowed either!
I feel thwarted. Crochet needles are more blunt than pencils are. (Especially if it isn’t inline) They suggest to bring a book. I mostly listen to audiobooks nowadays so I’ll have to find a good actual book to read.

Sigh. If I get assigned a trial, there are going to be so many waiting hours that could’ve been passed pleasantly with crochet. I of course would put things away during the actual trial, but courts are slow and there is so much in-between waiting.
Maybe my county is just over-strict. Anyone else have jury duty and were able to crochet?

I’ve been on call 3 times before, but never called in to actually be a juror. I hope my hearing impairment won’t be a problem. I let them know of it on my juror questionnaire… Maybe that’s why I’ve never been called in.

Would be good if they would allow you to wait in your car. Then you could crochet there:woman_shrugging:

Maybe I’ll bring it to leave in the car in case I have freedom like that… If I am called up.

I know I was complaining about the restrictions, but I’d actually like to participate in a trial someday. - as a Juror or expert witness, I mean.

I can understand the need for the restrictions, but that is a lot of time without anything to do. I am not much of a reader, so that wouldn’t work for me. Last time I was called for jury duty I wasn’t chosen, but so wanted to be!

I learned that one of my friends is also on call for jury duty. It would be fun to be there at the same time and chat during downtime. She’s got 6 younger kids in school, and one is homeschooling, so she’s kept pretty busy normally.

I’m so glad I don’t need to report Monday (I already called in to ask) as my dishwasher is getting repaired then. I did not want to postpone that! So tired of hand washing all the dishes and using paper plates and plastic cutlery.

Have you ever been chosen?

In my county we check the jury website every day for a week until it finally says either come in or you are excused

Three times I’ve been summoned but never served.

The closest I’ve gotten is we were expecting to be brought in to the courtroom to start the selection process but got told that the defendant settled out of court.

Another time, a federal court case, they already had their 12 people and enough alternates so I was excused

Earlier this year I checked every day all week and it finally said that I didn’t have to serve

The opportunity is cool but I guess maybe they think it could be a distraction during the case. Like the others suggested, maybe keep it in the car Incase you can leave for breaks.

I do not drive so that is not an option for me

I co own a car, my boyfriend is the driver

I can only hope that when I’m finally called to actually serve, that it is the courthouse here downtown that I can walk to, or the other one, a bit north of me, that I can take the light rail train to.

@WalktoCrochet what kind of books do you like?

Really depends on my mood, but the standard is that I like clean stories that inspire me. While I don’t require a happy-go-lucky ending, I do not like to be left hanging, so I prefer standalone books or fully finished series.

Reading is a mental escape for me, so I don’t like having to read a sentence more than once to understand what it’s trying to say. I don’t like ensemble books-something that jumps all over to show everyone’s POV. Stories with a lot of political intrigiue and guile give me a headache.
Some genres include fantasy, adventure, mystery, historical fiction, dystopian worlds, alternate histories…
I like litRPG, but it’s hard to find a clean series.

Because OF my hearing impairment I was taken off the list of potential jurors.

Did you have a choice in that? I kinda want to serve someday, and I can’t help my impairment. I was put lower down on the list of jurors to be called up. We were put in groups. I was in group 6. Groups 1-5 needed to report at one point, but 6 and on never were called up. I wonder if it was my impairment that put me lower on the list. Idk.
Well, till next time, I guess.

Yes, that may be the case for not selecting you. Sorry. I thought it would be interesting myself.
