Knit or Crochet?

It looks like the crochet waistcoat stitch to me for most of the hat and the brim looks like sc BLO ribbing but I could be wrong

Looks crocheted using split single crochet (waistcoat st)

I am not 100% sure with one it is, because it could be knitting but it also could be a different crochet stitch. They just look so similar! Comparison:

It looks knit but is crochet. You can take the photo and put it into Google on the app and it will search for it. I did that and found the pattern. It’s free on Yarnspirations

You could make this using crochet, with a special stitch called a crochet knit stitch. I would say this is knit though :)

This is crochet waistcoat stitch, if you look closely you can see the tops of the stitches from the round before through the stitch you’re looking at.

Not sure but I’d say prob knit.. I only crochet myself and it doesn’t really look like crochet..

I don’t knit, but I Think it’s knitting? Idk.

I’m pretty sure it’s knitted because of how small the stitches are… but if it’s crochet that would be cool because I can’t for the life of me learn how to make a crochet binnie

This post got a lot more traction than I thought it would-
it’s a trick question y’all

IT’S CROCHETED!

It’s the split sc (splsc)/waistcoat stitch!
Congratulations to everybody who got it right, especially @EmilyCrochets4 who found the pattern and @craftycellist, @Athomas0200, @anoswaldoddity, @BethuskaCrochet, @doggie, and @CrochetLife2025 who correctly guessed the stitch!
Does anybody want me to do a weekly crochet-or-knit poll for funsies?

Ty, and I want that poll! It’ll be fun guessing if it is crochet or knit!

Oh! And I forgot to add- you can also make amigurumi with that stitch (because it’s a SC modification) and it looks really cool!

If you’re also planning to make some amigurumi in the waistcoat stitch, here are some tips:

  • The stitch is super dense, so it’ll be really difficult to make it with the hook size you normally use, so size up a LOT. I used a 5.00mm for this!
  • It’s a little bit shorter than a regular SC, so I sometimes add 1-2 extra SC rows if it looks a bit squished (or you can just stuff it more!)
  • I’d definitely recommend starting with something that doesn’t use a MR/circle at the beginning, because it is quite hard to do that if you don’t already know the stitch. Start with something that you work into a chain at the start, like a leggy froggy!
  • You’re going to have to use sc2tog instead of an inv decrease when decreasing, because it won’t work any other way. It doesn’t leave holes like in regular SC though!

So you’re going to go between the “legs” of the previous SC row:

and you should also come out between the “legs” on the back.

With the hook: (you would have it in the loop, I took it out because it’s easier to see that way)

and it would come out the back like this: (the base of the arrow is where it comes out)
