i can agree with this! i do have some basic ones in my shop but it was because i was new, but im focusing on some more creative ones( if i ever have the time to write them down

I am an avid tester. And the sheer amount of basic frogs, octopuses(?), bees, that are getting tested is a little insane. I wish people would be able to have the patience to practice the basics first. From personal experience. When I first opened my shop, I would say I was a beginner, I only released 1 pattern which is unfortunately a basic octo. (I am in the process of making a different pattern to replace it and when it is out imma take it down.
Then I was like, hey! My octopus looks worse that A, B, and Cs’. So i mostly worked on making patterns, then started testing to be able to kinda know the process after I got pretty good, then I went back to actually making unique patterns. A lot of them are not out yet and in the tester phase, but they are looking pretty good. If there is anyone who is new to crochet and wants to open a shop, learn from my mistake and wait, practice your basic skills, make some patterns, do some testing. Then design patterns once you are ready.

I’m glad someone is addressing this but I feel like even if everybody (new or old to fiber arts) wanted to make a blob pattern and post it on their shop, I wouldn’t mind too much since it’s my choice if I want to follow that shop or not. While it does sort of fill the feed with slop I wouldn’t say that it’s too big of a deal since if someone wants a specific pattern, they can simply use the search tool. Tbh when I first learned how to crochet I made the ugliest stuff and thought it looked good so even tho I agree w/ u I do still think that for beginners they are a little limited to what they can and can’t make and they do need some form of encouragement before they can make more original things.
Ultimately tho the toxic positivity needs to go but u can’t rly do anything Abt what ppl wanna write patterns for without shutting them out bc sometimes ppl dont realize when smth just isn’t worth posting.

I think lowering the threshold for designing your own patterns is one of Ribblrs great strengths.
The question we rather have to think about, in my opinion, is why there are not more unique, creative and complex pattern. Think about it this way: if the beginner designers were gone, including their chats, questions, etc - what would be left? Ribblr would be quite dead if you ask me.
So while I strongly encourage creativity and thriving to become better crocheters and designers I want to point out that this goal isn’t necessarily reached by taking away the basic patterns.
Do you have ideas what keeps designers from posting more advanced patterns?

Yes but on ribblr you can look through the website without an account. You can browse through patterns and actually use the website. Yes you need an account to get patterns and create and use community but with ravelry I can’t do anything without an account. I am not saying that ravelry is bad I’m just saying it’s difficult if you don’t have an account yet.

I totally agree, I don’t see as much as this because I’ve started freehanding more often and finding inspiration elsewhere (ribblr is still my fav tho lol) but yes when I do go browsing, my feed is

And I don’t see anything I haven’t seen before unless I actually search at this point. I totally think we should all make unique patterns and stop copying other creators for fame. How would you feel if you worked for years to get to a point, make a hit pattern and tons of people absolutely love it, then a bunch of other people grab onto your coattails and make something pretty much the same. Wouldn’t feel good if they got credit then would it? I think we need to put ourselves in these creator’s shoes when it comes to stuff like this. I don’t think I could find the original whale pattern for those guys if a really tried there’s so many now. Thsi was very well said Ty for posting about this.

I agree. There are so many bees and leggy frogs and octos that its became a chore to find an original pattern. I get that a little pattern is easy but you can make something small and it still be original. If people would try to shift a little bit, we could have so many more new patterns in areas that arent all about being able to make something in an hour or less. If you think about it, there are a bunch of areas that arent dominted by new crocheters. For example, tapestry crochet. Tapestry is easy as long as you dont get your yarn tangled. It doesnt have to take forever either. It may take longer than amigurumi but it still can be done relatively quicky and with things like stitch fiddle and ribbuild it doesnt take long to do. If beginners could try making tapestry crochet, wearables, accessories etc, it would be so much easier to make original things.

I would love to encourage a beginner but they will not gain anything but courage by copying.
We’re not talking about someone who has just started crocheting and has made and sold the same design as someone else using the same pattern. We’re talking about those who produce designs, and copy the pattern of an another designer as it is.
Let me show a few example on the topic;
If there is already a frog like this,
Try to do something like this and add some value, (same shape but with completely different pattern and yarn type)
Ideally, do something like this to be completely different,
This is exactly what I did 
I started with pet accessories, tapestry and hairbands. Now I’m designing my first two amigurumis and that’s hard I have to say 
Also this! Yes! I will add some examples for these too. Some of them has copyright issues but, you get the point. It doesn’t have to be an copycat octo, blob, whale, frog to be easy, fast and beginner friendly.

Those keychains are so cute! With what ive put in my shop (most of my stuff hasnt released yet because i still need to set up stripe) I have searched for on here. I looked everywhere for dinosaur granny squares and couldnt find any but one. I looked all over for a chocolate covered strawberry pattern and couldnt find one so i made my own. I didnt find a pig pattern that i liked so i gathered inspo from ones i liked because none were like i wanted.

I believe the problem lies with those who are new to crochet (most often under 18), who don’t want to spend the time actually learning how to crochet properly before trying to make patterns. They basically want to skip the most important step. Like a baby that wants to skip crawling and walking and go straight to running. They want instant followers, fame and sales.

Yea, my first things on my shop (shared with @Elynncrochets , the shop is under her profile bc she’s my sister lol.) is starfish charms for headphones/car and a purse that has crochet hook pockets, wallet and phone pockets, and a hole for yarn to come from when crocheting on the go! I also have a super aw some bunny lovey pattern that’s free, because not many lovey patterns are free!
