Hi @LavenderxXxStitching! I love mosaic crochet and am happy to help. Here’s a quick rundown of how mosaic overlay charts work, in case it gets you started:
- Each row of the chart = one row of crochet, and each square = one stitch. You only ever work with ONE color per row (usually two colors total), alternating colors each row.
- On a chart, blank squares are usually worked as single crochet into the back loop only, and marked squares (often an X or filled square) are worked as a front-post double crochet into the stitch two rows below. That long dc is what creates the pattern.
- Every row starts with a chain and is worked right to left on the right side, left to right on the wrong side (or you can work both directions on one side for a reversible look with the “double envelope” border).
Tips for designing your own grid:
- Start on graph paper (or a free pixel-art app) and keep the design symmetric if you want it balanced.
- Keep your stitch count odd so the pattern centers nicely.
- The classic mosaic look uses sc rows with front-loop/front-post dc worked 2 rows below.
If you share what you’re stuck on (reading a chart, designing one, tension at the edges, etc.), I can get more specific! ![]()
