Need advice: Scarf vs Cowl

So I have 4 nephews and 2 nieces ranging from the ages of 3-12. I’ve been making these hats between other projects for them for Christmas except I’m doing 3-4 colors instead of two.

I was considering making them either a matching scarf or matching cowl for each one as well. My dilemma comes with amount of yarn + wearability. I have no children of my own and no experience with boy children (the nephews are newly adopted + one is a foster child).

So here are my questions:

  1. Either way I will using the waffle stitch so that it matches the hat, do you think a scarf or a cowl will take more yarn?
  2. Do you think the boys would wear a cowl/scarf? The boys are aged 3, 6, 9, & 12.

I think the cowl will take more yarn because it tends to be bigger. The scarf might take less time and take less yarn.

If you are choosing based of of yarn and time id say scarf! I don’t really know opinions of boys in those ages, but if my 5 yo brother received a scarf or Fancy scarf (cowl) i know he would be grateful either way. Its definitely a personal choice to make either of them, since its your time and money!
