need help achieving a certain look to single crochet stitches!

hello!

i :heartpulse: this look of the single crochet stitches in this pattern where they all appear as these slanted lines. no x, no v, just these cute consistent diagonal little guys (new gender unlocked, cute consistent diagonal little guy). i found a video explaining how to achieve this look, but i can never get the same result. i made sure to match the yarn and hook used in both the video and the ballfrog pattern, but i still don’t get the same look. it’s close, but not quite there.

is it an overall tension difference? should i be pulling certain loops up at different heights or tensions? i have no idea, so i thought i’d come here in case anyone knows the magic behind this.

I have accidentally ( since I like the look of a tight x stitch) done this before , and yes its just a tension difference, when you yarn over ( i don’t think you want yarn under for this technique) the loop on your hook that is behind the one you just got needs to be loose. So let’s say you have two loops on your hook, when you yarn over and pull through both of them, make sure that the one loop you end up with after pulling through both loops is loose. I hope this helps, and also this is something some people just do naturally so it might take awhile to get it exactly how you want. In a bit I will see if the information I just gave you is correct ,and I test it out for myself :grinning::smiley:

Actually disregard alll the stuff about that one loop being loose!

I think you’re just going to have to keep on practicing what the video says and just keep adjusting your tension till it gets how you want!:blush:

Looks like its yarning under.

when you say yarn under, is it yarn under for one loop and yarn over for the next, or yarn under for both?

Yarn under when you pull up a loop from the ā€˜v’, I think that’s what the pattern did

most amigurumist use the method yarn under to create the slant, yarn over on the other hand will create sort of a ā€œvā€. I personally started using yarn under on accident, and that’s just what I use for any project!
I can attach photos in a second!

that’s what i do as well, i think it may not be working with my tension or the way i am yarning under. i insert the hook in the stitch, yarn under to pull up a loop, then yarn over to finish the stitch. i wonder if yarning under instead of over to finish the stitch would do the trick?

I’ve never tried that before, I always yarn over all the time. You should try it though, i’m curious now.

your yarn undering sounds right to me, I’m not sure how yarn undering the last part would work though.
Here are some of my makes using yarn under, not sure if this is the look you want:

is it inside out? That probably sounds like a stupid question but I used to crochet inside out.

It doesn’t look inside out to me :smiley:! Because if it was inside out there would most likely be a really weird stitch pattern!

Mine come out kinda like that. I do yarn under and then yarn over, for amigurumi. I also tend to have a tight tension so maybe it’s that combined with YU? I’m not really sure. And I notice it more when I use plush yarns rather than regular acrylic. But that difference could just be me using the yarns differently…

Maybe hook has something to do with it? I use a hook that’s about the same width as my yarn for all my amigurumi. It’s probably mostly my hook choice that creates my tighter stitches actually, more so than the tension I’m holding my yarn with. Im really not totally sure, just throwing out ideas based on what I do. I’m not trying to make the slants they just happen when I do the YU/YO method but I’ve seen other people use that technique to get the x look so I don’t know!

Yeah yarn under with an even tension will create a neater (and probably more slanted) look

example (shameless self promo, it’s from my cactus pattern!) also sorry this photo sucks I had to take it rn 😭

i would say this is more of an x shaped single crochet (which i do use sometimes but not what i’m looking for on this project) but thank you nonetheless! :heart_hands: and no worries, the photo is perfectly fine! lovely little cactus pot :cactus::heartpulse:

totally valid question! in my case it is not inside out (we don’t talk about my work when i first started crocheting in 2021 :joy:) but i appreciate you asking! it’s definitely something that can be overlooked, especially with beginners or those not super familiar with the anatomy of crochet.
