Needing Advice

Do y’all happen to know of any tools or garments that can help reduce hand/wrist pain and muscle spasms while crocheting, or stabilize super shaky hands?

I’ve recently picked up crochet again after 5+ years without it, only to discover that my h-EDS has degraded my joints much further than where they’d been the last time I started a project. I’ve still got the muscle memory for stitches, I’m just really struggling to hold my needles properly and pull loops through.

(For reference, it took me about 40 minutes to type this out, my fingers are certainly no longer speedy)

Hi! you might be interested in the Chunky Boy crochet hook. It helps reduce joint pain and is a way thicker hook. You can buy one, then put any crochet hook into the mold. you can find it here: chunkyboycraft
Also i see this is the first time you posted, welcome to the community :)

Chunky Boy has had a lot of issues unfortunately
Here’s a full deep dive:

I have EDS and my main issues with them after trying one out are:

  1. They’re quite heavy, which I noticed put a lot more strain on my wrist than just crocheting normally.
  2. It was hard for me to hold it with my finger issues
  3. Because of their shape, I ended up using my shoulders a lot more when crocheting, which hurt.
  4. They get stuck so badly:sob: if you put a hook in one you’re never getting the hook back out

That’s not to say it won’t help anyone, but I could barely crochet for 20 minutes using it!:sob:

I haven’t found anything that really really helps, but here’s some things that
make a slight difference with my EDS:

  1. Gently stretching your hands and wrists before crocheting
  2. Crocheting with a pillow on your lap that is tall enough to hold your arms up. This really helps my back, shoulders, wrists, and elbows.
There’s a lot of pillows on amazon for this. I’d recommend the memory foam ones for gaming (the crochet ones don’t seem that great and they’re really expensive)
  3. Compression gloves help with some of the pain in my hands
  4. Taking so so many breaks. It’s incredibly annoying but it does help
  5. Using hooks with a rubber covering. This made a huge difference with the pain in my hands
I bought this set over a year ago and it’s still working great
Amazon.com: MECHEER Crochet Hooks 12 Sizes Crochet Hook Set, 51 Pack Yarn Crochet Kit for Beginners, Knitting Needles with Ergonomic Handles for Arthritic Hands, Crochet Needle Kit with Blue Case for Crocheters

I hope you can find something that works for you!! It sucks not being able to do the things you love ://
