pattern copyright problems

I want to make a pattern for a granny square jacket, and was looking at some fun granny squares on ribblr. However, I don’t know if I can post the pattern bc a lot of people are like DO NOT COPY PATTERN. But also, it could js be patterns that they posted but didn’t create - I saw five star pattern granny squares that looked exactly the same - so it would be ok to copy. Please give me ur thoughts on the subject :folded_hands:

To be clear, you’re talking about using someone else’s existing granny squares and putting them into your pattern for a jacket?

If there are patterns on here that weren’t created by the shop owner, the pattern should be reported.

And welcome to the community. I always say, it’s only easy if you know. So, good question.

Any pattern you offer here (or anywhere else for that matter) should be 100% entirely your own original work. Period

Not ā€œinspired byā€ and no use of copyrighted or trademarked images or ideas (no Snoopy, no PokĆ©mon, no Harry Potter, no Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, no characters from books or movies that you don’t have official permission from the owner or a paid license from the owner to produce).

Yes. Granny square patterns that they posted on ribblr for everyone to use. I only know a basic granny square, so that’s why I was looking.

You can certainly make a jacket for yourself from granny squares designed by other designers. You can even sell that jacket to anyone if you want to

but if you want to offer a pattern for your jacket (free or paid doesn’t matter, copyright and trademark still applies) the squares should be your own original and unique design, not someone else’s design

There’s quite a few very lovely granny square patterns here on Ribblr
