Wondering why patterns don’t show the yardage of yarn needed for the pattern. I am trying to make sure I have enough of a particular yarn to make a scarf for my Grandma fro Christmas but none of the patterns show how many yards are needed. Does anyone know why?
I think it’s just a personal choice. I know I have thought about it with my patterns, but I haven’t either. (I don’t have clothing patterns so not as bad I guess). I do mention the yarn used though. Half the time that isn’t mentioned in patterns either. I think it would be helpful also. You could message the designer and see if they know. I tried to make a top and it only said 7 skeins of yarn, but didn’t say what kind, or what size of skein. I ended up adding a rainbow of colors to make it work. Still bothers me.
The size you want to make the scarf both length and width, and generally most scarf patterns are made to be customizable in length and some by width too in a made to measure way
The size yarn you want to use will effect it too.
Also the amount of yarn changes with the size of the yarn and the size of the hook you use
The yarn used, hook size used and tension all play a factor in the yardage. So the yardage varies some times a little and sometimes a lot.
You’re pushing my buttons girl! I ask the same darn question!
I buy the pattern and the pattern requires 35g of some obscure yarn in Europe and no suggestions for substitution!
Yes! People need to be more specific on
Total meters/yard
Yarn used baby barf worsted/#4 weight
8 -12 skeins of of 200m -total for project ranges from 1600-2400
Substitutions : Red Barf worsted weight basic vomit
Yes, you all probably have a point that yardage might vary. I am no pattern designer, so keep that in mind. But especially with clothing and wearables, isn‘t the point of following a pattern to create a specific product that turns out the way you expected it and that was why you initially chose that pattern? You need to know what to expect and how much yarn you need to buy.
So I agree with OP. I think it should be mandatory to give at least some info about the material you used. For example the yarn type (cotton, acrylic, blend etc), yarn size, yardage, weight of skeins if you use that as an indicator or even the weight of the finished product because that way you could estimate what you would need. Also with made to measure patterns, designers should put some indications on what you need.
I would really love if this was mandatory information to fill in before you can release a pattern (at least for clothing). And to prevent people from putting just something in in order to be allowed to release the pattern, you could make an option to put in an estimated amount of materials needed, so you know that the designer just took a guess. But I think it would elevate pattern quality if designers had to go through some thought process on materials before being able to release a pattern. And I don‘t think it‘s that hard for designers as yarn has labels and at least for me in europe, you can use that information pretty well to specify what yarn you used.
Again, this is just my take, and it only applies to wearables patterns.
Yes, I think before any pattern is released it should specify yarn info so buyer can look at it before buying the pattern.
Back in the day, (Ha, yeah I’m old) the clothing testers were more prolific and actually had to go through questionnaires to be accepted. It was taken more seriously. I remember weighing the skeins before and after the project (if different yarns were used) or just weighing the final project. That would help the designer with notes on amounts used for the different sizes. We could help by putting that in the journals.
Ya, I read the journals before buying the pattern if there is any.
