I have been asked to make this for a family that lost the grandma in the picture. Does anyone have a suggestion of the type of stitch and joining for this hat?

It looks a bit like some kind of granny square, with half granny squares used at the top and bottom to fill in the gaps between the diamonds (so the end result is a rectangle, which is then seamed at the side and gathered on top).

I think your right. Possibly a Tunisian stitch with a crisscross border?

I don’t think it’s a Tunisian stitch. It’s hard to tell but it looks like some kind of solid stitch to me, maybe double crochet?
I think construction wise, each of the squares and triangles were worked from the centre out like a granny square and probably assembled like this:
The left and right edges would be seamed to form a tube, and then it’s gathered at the top.
