PSA/review of big twist rave unicorn, lot 52/1851!

I want to start off by saying that I do like this yarn! I’ve used 2 other colors but I’ve had the same issue twice with this lot of the color Unicorn.

As you can see, it looks as if the yarn has been cut at some point, I took the knot apart to see if it was just that or if I had the same problem of split yarn again, sorry that I didn’t take a pic of that. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s happened with two different cakes at around the same place.

The yarn is pretty Inconsistent in thickness as well, which isn’t an issue for me as I’m making personal items out of it but I can see it getting annoying for others. It’s also frustrating, and sometimes impossible to frog as it bunches on itself. It is also pretty scratchy! I wouldn’t recommend making garments with it if you have sensory issues or if you have a skin condition like eczema for example.

Also if you have sweaty hands or hyperhidrosis like me, the yarn WILL squeak and be harder to work with (speaking for crocheting at least)

I do love the unique colors, and how warm the yarn has kept me with a hat I made! The color schemes are what drew me in and are the reason why I’m still using Rave, despite my frustrations. The issues can definitely be worked through but they are something to keep in mind, especially if you’re ordering online and can’t get a feel of it before you commit to a project.

I’ve never tried this yarn but I’ve had yarn with the same issues exactly like this before from different brands! Definitely something to consider when/if I try it I was actually wondering if I should make a garment with this. I’ll have to check in person to see for sure how it feels on my skin thanks for the review/Heads up!

My aunt suggested I use yarn or fabric softener when I handwash the scarf I’m making :) hopefully that helps with the scratchiness. I have heard of doing that with acrylic yarn, but I’m only about 4 months into my crocheting journey so I’ve never tried it. I’ll probably make a swatch and try it out soon.

those are called factory knots. im not sure why, but sometimes in the factory they have to do make those knots, and they are the most annoying thing. i can’t speak on the other ussues, but i know the knots are very annoying

Yeah I’ve heard about that too but haven’t tried that just yet also steam blocking and/or other blocking could help with it too! I personally steam block acrylic makes depending on what they are and it gives it more drape, shape and softness, so hopefully It could work with this yarn as well :grin: would have to make a swatch as well to see, definitely let me know how the fabric softener works on the swatch!

I didn’t know that they were common enough to have a name, that’s good info to know :)! It was so annoying to deal with, especially because the yarn slowly transitions into the next color and the split didn’t start back at the same spot, so it’s fairly noticeable in the piece I’m making right now ;-;

i definitely get that, i use bernat baby blanket yarn a lot and I’ve had 3 factory knots in a skein on multiple occasions
