Just search Disney in the patterns if Disney finds you out of all of those I would be surprised

If you are infringing someone else’s copyrights or trademark then that would not be allowed. You need to consult with a professional to advise you on fan art, licensing and all your potential routes. Feel free to change out our terms and conditions.

Isn’t it totally okay as long as it is free?

If you plan of publishing the patterns, this could be infringing on Disney’s copyright.

HOWEVER, for winnie the pooh, there is a version of him that is in the public domain that you can use. This version does not include his red shirt, that is still owned by disney.

And some people will say, just change the name, but they own the design, not just the name, of the character.

You can make it for your own personal use and probably gift it to others, but selling or publishing a pattern or a finished object could get you into trouble.

I took down some of my free studio ghibli patterns because I just felt so uncomfortable with this prospect.

Sadly no, even if its free they could agrue that you gained something (followers, a customer base) because of their IP.

Okay that is weird! I feel like they would target people that are selling those copyrighted things-there are PLENTY

I found 18 Winnie the Pooh things on here-that say Winnie the Pooh. Not even counting the ones that say ‘yellow bear in red shirt’. And most of them are paid. Why aren’t those people getting in trouble?

(Sorry that I’m asking many questions, i’m designing a Joy pattern from Inside out but now I’m worried…)

Okay. I’ve seen patterns for Pooh and they wrote Pooh bear. Pooh bear works or winnie bear

Oh ok! I thought it was ok since there were other disney things on here. I probably won’t do it then.
I wasn’t going to charge. It was gonna be free

I did a minion one and it was okay! Just make sure it’s free just to be safe!

Yeah, but I highly doubt they got the proper licensing to sell them, should disney find them, they will at the very least ask ribblr to take them down, it could go further into taking down a whole shop if they have multiple characters.

There was a time when disney hadn’t released their plushies for baby yoda and the crochet community went wild with the amount of patterns they put out and a lot of them got cease and desist letters because of it. (And they have done this for other characters too, stitch being one of them I believe )

And just because they haven’t been reprimanded yet doesn’t mean that it will never happen, its better to be safe than sorry. And unless someone goes through the proper channels and get a license to use the character and pay the fees, they technically arent able to publish or sell their patterns.

And winnie is a special case he (and many of the other characters from Christopher Robin) entered the public domain in the last couple of years. So you can use the name and the orginal book version of winnie, but Disney’s winnie will not enter public domain for a long time and those who have the red shirt are infringing.

That is a bummer. I heard about the yoda thing, people got sued right?
And  Winnie isn’t the same without the shirt
