Question About Poly Pellets

Hello everyone. I’m making my first amigurumi after a long break from them and was considering using poly pellets (aka small plastic pellets) to fill it. Would I be able to fill the entire thing with them? I’m using worsted weight yarn and a 3.5mm hook. I’m just curious if it was at all possible. Also on the note of this project, I’m very obviously going to lose yarn chicken but I used an older unabled yarn from my stash. Should I bring the project to the store and find the closest match or just restart completely with a new skein in a possibly different shade? Have a lovely day!

One method I’ve seen for using poly pellets is filling one of those thin sock things used to try on shoes, and then putting that in your plushie and filling the rest wit regular stuffing so that the pellets don’t fall out.

I’ve seen several people using those, i just wasn’t sure if i could leave them loose since the stitches are so tight

hmm… I don’t know, I’ve never used them. You could try!

Given the stitches are so tight you are probably fine just putting the pellets in. I typically use a small sock or bag and put my pellets in that and strategically place that in the amigurumi so that it sits up properly. I find that works best for me. Using a whole amigurumi full of pellets would make it quite heavy.

my goal was to make it heavy lol, especially since in game it’s used as a weapon

I’ve used Polly pelts for a door stop gnome I made a few years ago. While I crocheted them a bag I would highly recommend using nylons and tie off the end. Not sure what they are called where you are. I haven’t had any issues with my pellets falling out but you never know.

As for the color issue ….. personally I’d chance and go to store to get a new skein and try color matching.

If it’s that uncomfortable for you that route then I would suggest starting again that way you’d know it all 100% matched if your worried about the color being too off.

I can’t wait to see what your designing

is the nylon malleable (able to be squished into different shapes)? if so i wouldn’t mind using it. I’m not designing a pattern this time around, but I am remaking this project from a year or two ago because i realized halfway through that it was inside out  Only this time I’m using worsted weight since the yarn I used last time is much too expensive to use for this one project alone

Yes it’s very, I don’t know if you’ve ever owned like tights or stockings or something but it’s just a really thin material that doesn’t change anything (like movement wise)

ah interesting, i haven’t seen it very much in person so i wasn’t sure how easy it was to maneuver. I’ll definitely look into it

Yes. As hamsters mentioned.

They are like socks that go all the way up the leg and are sheer. If I had some I’d show ya. That plushie looks cool so you could easily stuff a nylon with those and hold that shape.

good to know! i was worried about where the legs split apart. should i cut a slit and sew it to make 2 separate pieces or do you think it could stretch enough (my apologies fot all the questions )

No worries! Actually if you get the full leg ones and not the knee highs you should be able to do it in one piece. Hopefully these images are ok to post :face_with_peeking_eye:

Full leg pantyhose or nylons

Knee high nylons

I suppose the knee highs would work too depending on how big you’d need your stocking to be.

ah i think a knee high should be plenty! thank you so much for all your help

When I use poly pellets I usually put the in a stocking so they don’t fall out. I don’t think you’d fill the whole item with them as they are generally used to weight something. Ie you crochet a frog/bear and you want it to sit without falling over and laying flat. You would put a small amount in the bottom area.

The only time you’d use them possibly loose or fill entirely is a fabric bean bag/frog that you toss in the air. I’m in UK and that’s what we call them.

I’d personally avoid the plastic and utilise small pebbles. They are heavier and much better for the environment. Plus they won’t fall through the holes. If you want to you can top up with hobby fill.
