Reinforcing a crochet patch

I need some help.

I want to make some patches out of some smaller tapestry pieces that I’ve made (acrylic yarn for now), but I’m not sure how to reinforce them to make them last.

My goal is to have them sewn on a bag or a jacket. I’m not sure if adding a backing, using fabric stiffner, etc would be best.

I don’t have a picture of my WIP patches, but there’s a panel that is similar but a bit larger than what I’m going for (roughly 2.5 inches by 4inches) to give an idea what I’m working with.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Amazing tapestry work!!

I’ve seen and heard of people sewing (or gluing) felt, fabric, jute, burlap, or ribbon to the backside of projects for aesthetics and adding structure, but don’t have experience myself using it to reinforce a project. I’ve not used fabric stiffener for a garment or accessory, but have used it on amigurumi and ornaments with some success. I hope someone else more experienced sees this and can offer more help.

For anyone following this, a punk fashion group led me to find that using cotton yarn made for better patches! Not only were they more durable, but less “fluffy” which is better for a patch.

I’m willing to try other materials and ideas in the future, but I’m very happy with these so far!

Agree about using cotton yarn, it’s stiffer and also helps tension. When I sized down to sock weight yarn it felt closer to the thickness of an iron on patch compared to using medium weight!
