Say hello to Beatriz (@DreamwBeacrochet)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind Dream with Bea Crochet Boutique
Tell us a little about yourself:
My name is Beatriz (she/her), I am currently a stay at home mom. Since I could remember I’ve always loved art, always drawing or painting. I knew I wanted to create art in some way so I became a fashion designer in NYC. I worked in the industry for almost 20 years. I got married in 2015, and in 2021 I had my son. I quit my career to raise my son full-time. I told myself that I would go back to work after he turns 2, but life took a different turn. My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of two and so I went from being a regular mom to a mom who advocates for her son and making sure he gets the right resources and support he needs. It was hard for me to get any help since I was the only person my son felt comfortable with. I felt isolated and depressed until a friend gave me a box of crochet hooks and yarn for christmas.
When did you start crafting and how?
After receiving my Christmas gift. The box of crochet stuff was kept on a shelf for almost a year until I saw a YouTube video on how to make a crochet cardigan. It just randomly showed up in my algorithm. I was so inspired that I decided to try crochet for the first time. I started crocheting in August 2024, and I haven’t stopped ever since.
How did you start designing?
Because I love to create, it became fun and exciting to try to crochet anything. I would find tutorials and try to make my own version.
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
I love so many craft types. I made all my baby shower decorations and my son’s birthday decorations. I just whip out my cricut machine and a hot glue gun and I get to work. I love using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to make my own graphics. I also made my own home decor like pillows and table runners and gifts.
What was the most memorable project you worked on?
My most memorable project was my pumpkin granny square cardigan. It took a whole month to make! And it was my second project ever.
What is your usual process for designing?
When designing apparel, I like to sketch and take measurements first, then I choose what stitches and yarn weight works best. If it is a new stitch, I’ll look for a tutorial on it. Because of my fashion design experience, I don’t feel the need to follow patterns. I only need them if I’m making granny squares, applique, or amigurumi. Since those are the most challenging for me.
What inspires you to create?
If I see something I like, I try to replicate it. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been drawing, painting, cutting and gluing pieces of cardboard, or sewing dresses for my barbie dolls. I’m inspired by a lot of beautiful things, I guess it’s because I have an open mind.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
I am currently working on a pencil bee plushie. My friend asked if I could make some for teacher appreciation week in May. And I lost count on how many WIP’s, maybe 4 or 5. I have so many projects on my mind right now.
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of? Share a picture!
My pumpkin granny square cardigan of course! I wore it during the fall season and for Thanksgiving dinner. I received so many compliments.
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
My favorite song of all time is “Breathe” by Leona Lewis but my current favorite is “New Woman” By Lisa and Rosalia.
My favorite books are the Twilight Saga, “Me before you” and “Me after You” by Jojo Moyes. The author has a third book that I will be reading next.
Movies: I love Disney movies! My favorite is “The Little Mermaid”. When I need some time to relax I’ll just watch my favorite movie in my bed with a cup of tea.
Share a funny story that happened to your recently!
My son has a speech delay, and so he can’t communicate very well yet. My husband and I were just talking about what we’re planning to do this weekend, we were in our bedroom, then my 3 year old son opens our bedroom door, walks in and says “What the ****” I was so shocked! I said “don’t say that!” My husband couldn’t stop laughing. I was trying to not to laugh but at the same time I felt a little proud.
