Say hello to Ella (@novamesne)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind NOVAMESNE
Tell us a little about yourself
Hello! I’m Ella and I’m the designer behind novamesne( it’s actually a combination of Nova and Demesne, so it means ‘new domain’ ). I’m Nigerian and I just graduated university with a degree in Physics, specialized in Atmospheric Physics. I love spicy and savory foods and I spend most of my free time on YouTube.
When did you start crafting and how?
I started crocheting in 2020. I was actually interested in Resin and bead making cause I was exploring Pinterest for hobbies I could learn. Then I came across a crochet patchwork cardigan by Shopfluffy and here I’m now
And how did you start designing?
I became interested in designing my own patterns in 2021. Alot of crochet tops/dresses I saw then had either an open back or a tie at the back. So, I thought of creating less revealing designs and I released my first pattern in 2022.
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Honestly, I would have said crochet 2 years ago but I’m getting into knitting a lot more now. Crochet will always be my first love.
What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
My most memorable crochet project will be this cardigan I made. I love the colors and I really enjoyed the process of making it.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
I’m currently making a dress for the valentine themed collab I’m participating in here on Ribblr.
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
I have three makes I’m proud of, the first is the Iris top, this knit scrap sweater and this crochet cardigan.
What is your usual process of designing?
I’m sometimes influenced by the weather. Like when it was cold, I wanted to make a knit sweater then I sketched it out and made it. And now, it’s getting hot here, so I wanted to make a light layering top and while sketching, I was listening to Watercolor Eyes by Lana del rey( that’s what led me to creating the Iris top
What inspires you to create/design?
I’m trying to figure out my personal style. So, most times I make projects to test if I’m comfortable with certain styles.
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
It’s hard to choose but I would say, Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Adichie is my favorite book. I named my Kambili Top Pattern after the main character.
**Do you have a funny craft related story that’s happened?"
Not exactly funny but more like awkward. I had just finished knitting my sweater and I went outside to take some pictures, I was trying to get some cool poses when my neighbor walked by. It was really awkward ( I was bent in a weird way at that moment
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
My favorite feature is the Ribbuild, I really appreciate how easy it is to copy and paste existing written patterns. I also like the Journal feature and community tab ( everyone is so talented)
Where can others find you?
I’ve a YouTube channel where I share my design process and tutorials.
You can also find me on tiktok, Instagram and Pinterest. I’m Novamesne on all platforms.
Thanks so much for being here this week Ella, it’s a pleasure reading about you!
