Say hello to Hadley (@Cookiecrochet)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind [CookieCrochet]
Tell us a little about yourself
Hello! My name is Hadley and I’m the crocheter behind Cookiecrochet! I’m a high school student in California and I’m very happy to be this week’s Ribblr of the Week! I love to crochet but also read, listen to music, and watch movies and tv series :)
When did you start crafting and how?
I started learning to crochet in late 2020 with a rainbow loom hook and yarn I had lying around the house. I looked up tons of YouTube videos and watched and followed along until I got the hang of it. After learning I crocheted on and off for a bit but once I started posting my plushies online I’ve been consistent! I’ve loved being able to create my own plushies with just some yarn and a hook!
And how did you start designing?
I started designing in spring/summer of 2022. When I started learning I knew I would eventually love to make my own designs, so once I followed enough patterns and started to fully understand how amigurumi works, I started experimenting with my own patterns. I’ve been enjoying the process ever since and have loved being able to design plushies that other crocheters can make with my patterns!
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
My favorite craft type is crochet as it’s really the only craft I do on a regular basis. It’s also what I feel I’m best at and get the most enjoyment from!
What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
The most memorable project I’ve worked on is definitely my penguins in costumes pattern! It’s the second pattern I ever made and I had a lot of fun doing so. It was the first pattern I was proud of and it connected me to many amazing crocheters that tested, bought, or supported the project/pattern! It was also the first pattern of mine to become a best-seller which boosted my confidence in crochet and pattern designing overall. This made it very memorable to me. I also created a Christmas version last year!
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
Currently I’m working on writing my newest pattern, a 3 in 1 low sew bird pattern! It contains a cockatiel, love bird, and chicken and I hope to release either at the end of this month or beginning of next! I actually don’t have that many WIPs at the moment, only 2!
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
The make I’m most proud of is my squirrel pattern! The idea of a squirrel came from my sister and she drew a sketch for me to base the design off of. During the crocheting process I wasn’t too confident in how the plushie was turning out but I stuck with it and I’m really happy I did! Others really liked the plush and it’s now my best selling pattern on all the sites I sell it on including here on Ribblr!
What is your usual process of designing?
My usual design process starts with referencing either a sketch or a plushie I’ve seen online or have myself. Then I start testing things out with acrylic yarn as I can frog things easier with it. After I’m happy with how it’s looking I’ll crochet it in plush yarn and post it on my instagram!
What inspires you to create/design?
I’m usually inspired to create and design when I have a vision for a plush and can’t find a pattern that matches it. Then I’ll work on creating my own design and pattern!
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
I have too many favorite songs to list haha. Any song by Harry styles, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor swift, Conan gray, or Gracie Abram’s are always my recommendations. I love reading mystery and fantasy or really any YA novel. I just finished the entire Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi and would definitely recommend it. For movies I love anything Disney!
Share a funny story that happened to you recently!
Although this isn’t recent, how I was inspired to learn to crochet is kinda funny! I was playing Mario Kart and saw a crochet yoshi on the side of one of the tracks and at the time I thought it was knitted. I immediately wanted to learn so that I could make my own and after looking it up I realized it was crochet and started the learning process.
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
There are so many amazing features on Ribblr, but I think my favorite would have to be that I can copy my existing patterns and easily paste them into Ribblr. I usually write up PDF patterns first and then put them into Ribblr so the feature is super helpful!
Where can others find you?
You can find me on instagram @cookie.crochet!**
