Say hello to Mahum @mahumcrochets - our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind mahum crochets
Tell us a little about yourself:
Hi! I’m Mahum, a 21 year old crochet artist and educator sharing my love for cute things online. I love long walks, reading romance and fantasy books, sweet treats, pastel colors, cats, and wellness through crafting.
When did you start crafting and how?
I started crocheting during the pandemic as a way to keep myself engaged at home. It quickly turned into one of my favourite hobbies and a creative outlet that I used to escape from my university assignments. My first project was a bright purple sweater vest and the color haunts me till this day.
How did you start designing?
My journey began when I couldn’t find any crochet patterns that matched the style and aesthetic I loved, so I got inspired and created my own! My first design was the Emma book cover, which I made by turning a heart granny square into a detachable rectangle. After that, I continued to turn everyday objects into something cuter like the frog holding a heart pouch, cake tissue box cover, heart-shaped cushion, and lots more. Now, I’m trying my hand at designing made-to-measure clothing, so we can all crochet our dream wardrobes!
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Crochet is my first love! There’s something so calming about the repetitive motions and the way different stitches come together to create fun textures.
What was the most memorable project you worked on?
The heart-shaped cushion took me on a rollercoaster of emotions! It was my first time working on such an elaborate pattern and video tutorial, so it came with a lot of ups and downs. There were people who loved it and could easily follow along, but there were also people who found the instructions unclear. It taught me a lot about structuring patterns and making them accessible for different levels.
What is your usual process for designing?
I start with thinking about what I want to create, narrowing it down from plushies, clothing, accessories, or decor. Then, I look for inspiration from real life products and think about what people would like to make by hand themselves. This helps me pick the perfect project and from there, it’s all about finding the right stitches and techniques to make the pattern accessible for different crafting levels.
What inspires you to create?
I’m inspired by helping people make cute things! I learned how to crochet from watching youtube tutorials, so being able to share my skills and teach everyone is a huge motivator.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
A mesh cardigan for summer! I’m currently going through making different swatches and picking the perfect stitch. I used to have a lot of WIPs, but now I strictly focus on one project at a time. That’s how I’m able to stay consistent and post free patterns and youtube tutorials for each of them.
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of? Share a picture!
All of them! But if I had to pick a favourite, the cake tissue box cover holds a special place in my heart. It’s cute, functional, and one of the first projects that made me believe I could be a designer. I also adore the bouquet of lilies, the matching babydoll top and pet dress, and my collection bunny plushies.
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
So many to choose from! Any and all of Gracie Abrams’s songs, Emily Henry’s books, and my favourite movie of all time, The Princess Diaries.
Share a funny story that happened to your recently!
I found one of my cats lounging in my bathtub with not one, not two, but three balls of yarn!
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
Being able to cross off which step, row, or round you’re done with! No more back and forth or racking your brain when you forget where you were.
