Say hello to Mercy (@craftycellist) - our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind CraftyCellistCrochets
Tell us a little about yourself:
Heyyy guys! My name is Mercy and Iām a junior in high school. (My pronouns are she/her). Iāve been homeschooled since the second grade, and I love it! (More crochet time ) As many of you know I have played the cello for the past 6 years (going on 7!), hence the username! I joined Ribblrā¦I think itāll be 2 years ago in July. After high school I plan to get a degree in music therapy!
When did you start crafting and how?
I started crocheting when my mom and dad got me 2 Woobles kits for Christmas 2022. So itās been about 2 years! My first ever project (the yeti kit) was a wonder to behold. Inside out horns, lopsided face, understuffed⦠but luckily I kept going, and now I have a pattern shop, Iāve sold at markets, and my brothers are always asking for stuffed animals
How did you start designing?
My first ever design, if I remember correctly, was with leftover yarn from that first Woobles kit. I really wanted to make something else right away, without opening another kit. It was a tiny penguin, and honestly Iām kinda impressed with myself for getting the concept down so quickly. But my first real design was my macron turtle. (I sadly sold it before I could get good pictures of it that werenāt taken on a Chromebook. A remake is in order!)
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Definitely crochet. There are so many possibilities, from clothing to stuffed animals. Iāve definitely been diving more into clothing recently, but amigurumi will always be my happy place.
What was the most memorable project you worked on?
Thatās really hard. Iād say probably this toucan. It was my first time reading a pattern from a book, and I was struggling . It was also my most detailed and intricate make to date. (And the stitches⦠so many rounds of sc) But Iām totally in love. Iāve brought it to 2 markets so far, and it hasnāt sold. But Iām waiting for him to find a forever home (which may end up being mine, weāll see).
What is your usual process for designing?
Itās kinda chaotic First Iāll find something there either isnāt a pattern for, or there isnāt a pattern Iām inspired by. Then, Iāll either just Google pictures of that object, or crochet pictures of that object to get inspiration. Then, I just sit down and start crocheting. Iām not great at drawing, so I usually just ⦠go. But my brother is great at drawing, so sometimes heāll draw something for me to make (my cyclops pattern!) sometimes I get it first try (my peep pattern in testing) oooor thereās lots of frogging (Cameron the llama)
What inspires you to create?
Lots of things! Definitely my dad and brothers. When I have crochet block, Iāll ask them to give me an idea. Sometimes Iāll just Google: unique items, and see what comes up. Refined, I know. But sometimes Iāll just be out and about and Iāll be like āI should/can crochet thatā! (Harold the Hot Dog)
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
Letās do all 3! For songs, Iād recommend the groups Imagine Dragons and Neoni! For books, Harry Potter, Keepers of the Lost Cities, and anything by Rick Riordan. Finally, definitely watch the two original Wonder Woman movies!! So good. (Also Mitchells vs the Machines. HILARIOUS)
Share a funny story that happened to your recently!
So, I was at my most recent market, and this little girl and her mom came up to my booth. She picked up the frog I made from @hartme s pattern, and said āMommy, this frog is grumpy!ā, laughing really hard. Then her mom asked āwell why is he grumpy?ā, and the girl giggled and said āCAUSE HE EATING BROCCOLI!ā. They didnāt buy it, but it was the highlight of my day.
