Say hello to Natalia (@yokattapatterns)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind [ YokattaPatterns]
Tell us a little about yourself
Hi! I’m Natalia, 38 years old, living in Warsaw with my husband and our Shiba Inu, Kimiko. Originally from Moscow. I create unique amigurumi inspired by nature, pop culture, anime, and Asian aesthetics. Crocheting and creating patterns have become my passion and a big part of my life.
When did you start crafting and how?
Crafting has always been a big part of my family’s life. My mom and grandmother are skilled artisans, who sew, knit, and crochet. They taught me how to crochet, although I don’t remember exactly who or when. It’s been so long that I can’t imagine life without a crochet hook in my hand!
And how did you start designing?
I started designing in 2015. I had sketched a mermaid in my notebook and wanted to bring her to life through crochet. That desire led me to explore pattern design, and I haven’t looked back since!
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Crochet has always been my favorite. It allows for creating amazing textures and forms. I love how you can make something unique and beautiful from simple stitches.
What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
The most memorable project has been the pink flamingo Floyd. It has an interesting but simple shape and captures the hearts of everyone who sees it. Working on it was incredibly fun, and it always brings smiles.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
I’m currently working on the Sanrio universe dogs – Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Pochacco, and Bee from the show “Bee and PuppyCat”. I always have several projects going, so I have about five WIPs right now!
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of Mr. Chimera from the anime “Spy Family”. When I saw him in the anime, I instantly knew I wanted a friend like him. This project was very inspiring and gave me a chance to experiment with shapes and textures.
What is your usual process of designing?
The process starts with sketching the idea and finding the right yarn. I pick colors and combine shapes using my favorite plush yarn, experimenting with forms until I achieve a cute result.
What inspires you to create/design?
I’m inspired by cute animals, anime, movies, and beautiful forms. Sometimes the idea comes from a random sketch or photo, and sometimes from something seen in nature.
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
It’s hard to pick just one song, so I have two: “Cherry Blossom Girl” by Air and “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” by The White Stripes. As for a book, I recommend “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” by Haruki Murakami. They all set a special mood and inspire creativity.
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
I love the interactive patterns feature. It makes working on a project so much easier and allows me to track my progress effortlessly. It’s a game-changer for crocheters! I also love the ability to test my patterns with the help of such a wonderful community and want to thank all my amazing testers!
Tell us something funny that’s happened to you!
Recently, my Shiba Inu named Kimiko decided that her new best friend is my yarn ball. Every time I start crocheting, she brings it to me as her trophy. Now I always know where my yarn ball is if it goes missing!
Who are some designers you would like to give a shoutout to?
@wooliamigurumis, @LemonYarn, @kelvencrochets, and @haniscrochet - their work always inspires and delights!
Thanks so much for being here this week Natalia, it’s a pleasure reading about you!
