Ribblr of the Week - Meet Sarah L 🏅

Say hello to Sarah (@crocreate)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind [ [CroCreate]

Tell us a little about yourself
My names Sarah AKA Crocreate. I’ve been crafting all my life but crocheting since 2012. I live in the UK in Staffordshire with my Husband, Daughter, 2 cats and dog. I love colour, nature and animals!

When did you start crafting and how?
I’ve been crafting since I can remember from colouring to making all sorts with glitter and glue! I studied an Art and Design Foundation Diploma at college specialising in Textiles and have loved textiles ever since! That was when I was 18 and I’m 35 now so I’ll let you do the maths!

And how did you start designing?
I made EVERYTHING before I started designing because that’s the way I am I want to make it all! You learn so much from the simple act of doing and as I learned I started putting together simple patterns for headbands and gloves and grew from there. I didn’t branch out in amigurumi until about 2 years ago but that’s where my love lies.

Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Crochet is my first love for sure but I also love punch needling. I love that you can create a piece of art with yarn as if you’re using the needle as a pencil. It’s also super easy and very mindful.

What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
There’s so many to choose from! I made hearts for the fallen of the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester that was an amazing project and nice to honour the lost lives. I also made a square for the Hobbycraft granny square CAL in 2020 which was a sun to signify brighter days were coming during covid-19.

What are you currently working on?
I’m in the middle of quite a big amigurumi project that involves a mix and match of shapes to make several characters. A pic n mix if you will! If it turns out the way I hope I think it will be really fun and definitely colourful! It wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t!

Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
Soooo many. Last count was 30! I have a section in my craft room dedicated to wips! I have a vision I’ll create a youtube video finishing them all but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet!

Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
I love all my designs even the ones that I know will end up in crochet trash! I’m currently writing up a sea unicorn pattern that I’m super proud of so I’m sure I can give you a sneak peek.

What is your usual process of designing?
It might be a bit taboo but I rarely sketch out a design until I’ve started it. I start with a project in mind and work up some shapes that might work. I’ll then use these shapes and map out a rough sketch. If I’m struggling to create a particular part I’ll sketch quite a lot to get my head around working up the shapes. I write everything in a pad as I go. It’s basic but it works!

What inspires you to create/design?
I love animals and colours. I also love Kawaii design and a lot of my inspiration come from cute critters And illustrations of that particular genre. I have Pinterest boards dedicated to inspiration that are full of colourful candy stores, cute animals, or even things like candyfloss and sunsets because of the colourful vibes!

Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
I’m currently reading Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. I love fantasy fiction, myths, legends, magic and the occasional fight scene and this book series has that in spades!

What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
I love that you can request pattern testers at the click of a button. It makes the designing process so much more streamlined and stress free.

Tell us something funny that’s happened to you!
We were on holiday recently and I decided it would be a great idea to go in the sea, with my glasses on! Needles to say I can’t see a thing without them and they ended up at the bottom of the sea! Luckily a very helpful Spanish optician was able to get me a new pair very quickly!

Who are some designers you would like to give a shoutout to?
Some designers I would like to shout out are:

@KCACOUK - Heather is a brilliant designer and a lovely person too
@indigochilduk - amazing designs and so full of colour!
@LemonYarn - I absolutely love the whimsical designs a designer I’d love to collaborate with in my dreams!

Thanks so much for being here this week Sarah, it’s a pleasure reading about you!
