Say hello to Silvia (@anon35311671) - our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind [HugurumiToys]
Hi! Happy to have you here, tell us a little about yourself.
Hello everyone! My name is Silvia and I’m a 33 years old amigurumi designer! I currently work full-time, but I hope amigurumi will be my main job one day! I’ve been living in England (Brighton) for almost 4 years but now I’m back to my beloved Italy! I’m a Tv series enthusiast and you can’t probably name a show I haven’t seen!
When did you start crafting and how?
I started to crochet at 18! My mother showed me how to make a chain and some granny squares and, from there, I started to watch YouTube tutorials and I basically never stop to crochet since then! At the beginning I was doing just hats, scarfs and simple wearables, I actually started to approach to amigurumi years after, when I was 24!
And how did you start designing?
When I started doing amigurumi, I actually had no idea of how to read a pattern! I was doing all free hands, replicating cute designs found on google (I wasn’t on social either!) After some times I studies all the abbreviations and finally learnt how to read a pattern and wanted to make my own so bad!
I created my first original design later on when a group of crocheters on IG invited me to join a CAL, for which I created the lovely Thooty the Walrus!
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Making amigurumi is my passion! It makes me happy and helps me when I have a hard day!
When I first started my journey with amigurumi, I was using cotton yarn for all my projects, even big ones. Projects were really detailed but one plushie only would take forever to complete, so sometimes it was frustrating to design a new pattern!
Lately I approached the Chenille yarn and I just LOVE IT! Projects work quickly, the effect is super cute and fluffy and if you make a mistake while designing you can easily make another one and adjust it!
What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
Prince Perry from @airali_gray! It was actually the first pattern I ever purchased!
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
Just finished my Gingerbread Kitty which is being tested, and I’m working on the main Christmas character: Santa!!
Normally when I start a design, I try to finish it without distraction, so yeah it sounds incredible but I have only 1 max. 2 wips at the time
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
Definitely my Chunky Reindeer pattern with his adorable sweater!!
What is your usual process of designing?
Doodling the idea is the first step! Then I figure out which colors I want to use and the techniques required. From there is all a make and try till I reach the design I imagined!
Sometimes It goes well at the first try, some other times I have to frog it a lot, but I guess this is just part of the process!
What inspires you to create/design?
Kawaii inspires me! When I see a cute sticker, a drawing, or a cute character in a videogame I want to make an amigurumi version of it!
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
I’m obsessed with TV series and I probably could talk about that for weeeeks
As I need to choose, here my TOP 3 of all the time!
· Lost.
· Dexter.
· Big bang theory. Probably my favorite comedy, I just love all the nerdy quotes!
Share a funny story that happened to you recently!
Well, I have two kitties so everyday there are funny stories to tell
Like that one time I couldn’t find Carl anywhere, and found him 30 minutes later closed in a little drawer!
When I opened it, he was just there relaxed and comfy on my clothes and we are still trying to figure out how he got in there xD!
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
I love how easy it’s to copy and paste a PDF pattern on the platform! Also, you have the chance to link YouTube videos and all the pattern in general looks so neat and pleasant!
As a maker I love the fact you can cross out the rounds when you have completed it, so so clever!
Pay it forward - your shoutout to a fellow Ribblr
My fav. Designers on Ribblr are definitely:
@CrochetByGenna
