Say hello to Suzy @Madeformygirl - our new Ribblr of the Week and designer behind Made for my girl! ![]()
Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m Suzy, I used to travel the world taking underwater photographs but now I sit on my sofa with my cats playing with yarn! I love to create crochet toys for my daughter, it’s lovely to see her enjoy them and sometimes I even turn them into patterns.
When did you start crafting and how?
I’ve always enjoyed making things, drawing, photography etc. But starting crochet has a story behind it. Basically, I was given some feedback at work that I needed more patience! I’d tried crochet when I was a child and found it quite annoying, so I thought I’d learn patience by severely testing it. It worked. I bought a crochet kit by WeeWoolieWonderfuls and watched her how-to videos and some on YT and made my new daughter a bunny.
And how did you start designing?:
I found myself wanting to make things that I couldn’t find patterns for and I thought, how hard can it be? I started with a cloud to see if I could imagine the shapes and then make them to learn how the yarn ‘worked’.
Do you have a favorite craft type?
Crochet! I love to draw but I don’t do it much now, crochet is easier to pick up and put down with frequent interruptions. And I can do it in front of the telly :)
What was the most memorable project you worked on?
My most memorable project was the Octonauts. It was years ago now, when i first started making patterns, I made Captain Barnacles and Kwazzi and my daughter was obsessed. She slept with them for weeks. It’s always a win when she loves them enough to cuddle them for a long time.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
I’ve just finished a set of cozy ghosts and a ghost hanging basket (and a couple of tests). I have too many wips but if they hang about too long they end up forgotten in the cupboard so they’re not really wips, just unfinished stuff. I’ve just started a halloween curtain and I have a request for an anteater.
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
One project I really enjoyed was Medusa. I put wire inside so she could be all snakey and all the little hair snakes were so cute. I really enjoyed making her and I loved how she looked when I was done.
What is your usual process of designing?:
My usual process of designing starts with looking up the real creature if there is one. I imagine what my creation will look like, sometimes I sketch out if there is a tricky bit but that’s quite rare. I start crocheting and take progress photos as I go. I write my stitches down in my crochet notebook (I recently designed my own one because I was so tired of losing a bit or writing it down in three places and getting confused). Once I’m done I take the final photos (more recently a video too) then hand over the item to my daughter.
What inspires you to create/design?:
My daughter. She has a huge amount of input, sometimes she asks for something specific and sometimes I just make something I think she’ll find cute or interesting.
Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?:
My favorite movie is 5th Element.
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?:
I like the testing feature. I love how easy it is to get patterns tested and also to test other peoples patterns. I like making other peoples patterns to turn my designing brain off, its so relaxing. This feature gives a much needed framework for an essential part of pattern creation.
Take over our feed! Which 3 - 5 designers/patterns on Ribblr are your favorite?
I really love the bottle holder I made from @Gracefulllyyoudesigns. I’ve done quite a few tests for @craftycellist, she makes lovely patterns that always go down well with my daughter and she’s always nice to interact with. I also like the quirky patterns of @graciebobbins like the love lobster.
