Say hello to Teresa (@moooorumi)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind Moooorumi
Tell us a little about yourself
Hi! My name is Teresa but some of my followers may know me by my Instagram name, Moooorumi. I am currently a third-year pharmacy student and during my spare time, I enjoy crocheting, listening to music and dabbling in some arts and craft.
When did you start crafting and how?
When I was in primary school, I often watched an arts and crafts show called āMister Makerā which features a host (Mr. Maker) who creates tutorials on numerous easy crafting techniques in a fun and entertaining way. I guess thatās when I started crafting.
Whenever there was an opportunity for me to display an assignment in a creative manner, I often resort to crafting to create posters and dioramas instead of presenting them in the traditional boring essay and report formats. With crochet, I didnāt discover my passion for it until highschool when I was introduced to it by a classmate.
And how did you start designing?
I started designing when I found out that the crochet patterns I used donāt always turn out the way thatās displayed in the final pictures, causing me to make constant adjustments. So, I decided to create my own patterns so I can achieve the desired outcome.
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
My favourite craft type so far is crochet as it allows me to be creative and think critically, particularly when I design my own pattern. Itās also a perfect stress reliever and a fun way to improve my fine motor skills. I also sometimes doodle from time to time.
What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
My most memorable project was a commission I worked on for a friend, Angus the Cow. Despite being one of my biggest and longest projects to finish, I actually enjoyed the process of designing and physically crocheting the plushie. The reaction I got from my friend made it all worthwhile.
What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
Iām currently working on a hamster pattern which I intend on releasing for free as a gift for reaching a new follower milestone on my Instagram. As uni study season is soon approaching, this is the only current WIP I am working on at the moment.
Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
The designs that I am most proud of are my āHello Kitty Flowerā Pattern which I released for Valentineās Day and Pepper the bee pal.
What is your usual process of designing?
When designing a pattern, I start with a simple sketch and decide on the proportion of the plush (sometimes it turns out slightly bigger than I intend it to be). Then I continue selecting the yarn colours and crocheting some prototypes before having it tested by some pattern testers and released as a final good copy.
What inspires you to create/design?
I get my inspiration from many things. It could be a flower thatās growing in the garden or a plushie I come across when going to the mall, these simple everyday items are a great starting point for my pattern designing process.
Any favourite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
I have too many favourite songs, itāll take forever for me to list them! However, the genres of music I enjoy listening to are K-pop, R&B soul, lo-fi and instrumentals. In terms of books, recently I found myself enjoying the āBefore the Coffee Gets Coldā series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. An all-time favourite book of mine would be āWhen Breath Becomes Airā by Paul Kalinithi. I highly recommend this book for those going through stressful times. My favourite movie series is The Office. It always manages to lift up my mood whenever Iām having a stressful day.
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
My favourite feature on Ribblr is the interactive tools on their ePatterns including the ability to keep track of which row I have crocheted without the need to continuously go back and count the number of rows I have crocheted. It has helped me save so much time!
Share a funny story that happened to you recently!
A funny story that happened to me recently was the other day I was trying to find my crochet hook while I was crocheting in bed. I flipped over the mattress and shook the blanket and pillow cases multiple times to realise I left the hook on my bedside nightstand the entire time. This is not the first time this has happened.
Where can others find you?
You can find me on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest. I go by Moooorumi on all my social media platforms.
Would you like to shout anyone out on Ribblr?
If I have to list my favourite designers, they would be @waicrochets , @knotmichelle, @windrisescrochet , @sleepyfoxtreasures and @LorettasLoops. Iāve been following them ever since they started their account and cannot emphasize how much I love their creations! Absolutely amazing and itās working checking their profiles out.
Thanks so much for being here this week Teresa, itās a pleasure reading about you!
