I was thinking of adding a couple of my patterns to Ravelry to see if they will sell there better and I need a second opinion on this because it seems like a lot of work for an uncertain result.
If you just crochet: do you use any other platforms for your patterns? If so, what would you think of seeing a PDF generated by Ribblr there?
If you also write your own patterns: do you sell your patterns on other platforms? If so, have you noticed any differences between what’s popular here and on these platforms?
Thanks in advance for the answers!
I do buy pdf’s but so far only from Etsy and Kofi, I don’t think I wouldn’t mind seeing a PDF generated by Ribblr there by the designer,
Depends if the patterns have ads in them. I make my pdfs first then input them into ribblr, i didnt like the auto gen pdf and that was before they went advert crazy, goodness knows what theyd look like now. Etsy sells better butvthen you have to pay to list them. Also they’re hot on copyrighted characters so i had a captain barnacles taken down but id say etsy was my best place for selling pdf patterns. I guess if you do your own marketing then you’d have luck elsewhere but i haven’t done any im so slow and getting them finished past actually making the item they usually just stay in the sketchbook as notes.
I do have a bunch of my patterns on Ravelry but it’s more of a pain to get them set up on there. They also don’t do as well for me.
I wish I would write my patterns elsewhere first and then input them into ribblr, that would make selling them elsewhere so much easier, but I got used to writing them here.
About the auto gen pdf, I just did one to test it and besides the Ribblr watermark (I selected free version) it looks good. There aren’t any ads in the pdf and the only problem is that sometimes the spacing isn’t perfect.
That’s good to know, the process of transferring them to Ravelry is so daunting for me because of the set up and I don’t have too much free time nowadays
I’ve pretty much stopped putting my patterns on there just because of how much longer it takes.
I’ve downloaded free patterns from other sites and purchased patterns on Etsy as well as here, but I don’t have any plans to sell my patterns on any other site. Paying fees to Etsy before I even have evidence that I’ll be making sales feels… I don’t know, silly? The patterns I’ve purchased there have all been sold by popular specialty fabric artists, many of whom had makes go viral. For them, the up-front fees are worth it.
I do want to make it clear I have nothing against Etsy - I have, and will continue to, use Etsy for creative sales of relatively big-ticket items. If I’m going to sell a $1000 art piece online, Etsy is an obvious choice.
I’ve had vastly more sales on Ribblr than any other site, but I do have pdf copies available of my free patterns elsewhere (just to prevent other people from trying to profit from them, because they’re free here). They sell extremely rarely.
I personally wouldn’t use the Ribblr auto-generated pdfs to sell elsewhere, as the generated result is not organized the way that I like to make my pdfs (images are grouped further down, instead of appearing with the corresponding line). Also, if you use a special stitch that doesn’t auto appear in the abbreviations list, it has to be written as a note rather than show up with all the rest of the abbreviations (which makes less sense with a pdf). The auto-generated pdf could be a good starting place for making your own though, and it’s great for people who want to provide pdf options for patterns they sell on Ribblr.
