People really underestimate the craft.
“I can make that for free”
Oh so you have the yarn, the hook, the stuffing, the pattern, the time (possibly eyes). Then make it yourself, why stop if that’s how it’s going to be?
I’m not a fast crocheter but I’m not slow and most or all of my projects take at least an hour to make and that’s with only basic details/embroidery.
I can understand something being out of your price range but that doesn’t mean you should downplay or minimize someone’s time and effort
Me: Yes, but are they crocheted locally here in …… . This penguin is not mass produced in China, it is lovingly handmade by myself. It’s an artisan product.
Them: I could make that myself for free.
Me: I’d be very interested in knowing how you could make it for free. The cost of materials these days is crazy - this yarn cost me $$$ for just one skein, not to mention the stuffing, safety eyes, the pattern and at least an hour of my time.
I’d love to see your penguin when you’re finished so we can compare notes.
Yes, I think that’s more the issue- that it’s out of their price range. That they can’t afford artisan products, and that’s okay, because they aren’t our target audience. It’s just sad that some people have to try and put others down to make themselves feel/look better. Instead of just saying something complimentary and walking off, some people have to try to make you feel like you and your products are not up to standard. Never, lower your prices, as it takes away from all the hard work and dedication you put into your products. Chances are it’s worth more than what you priced it at to start with.
Totally agree. No one goes to a grocery store or clothing store and haggles pricing to get a discount. So doing so to someone who’s handmade something just strikes me as rude. I haven’t even done a market or anything but I’ve seen/heard similar stories and it just blows my mind the things people say.
