I’m about to start working on a steering wheel cover for my car, but I want to know if it’s worth it. Here are my concerns:
- I have sensory issues, and am worried about the feeling of yarn on the wheel during long drives.
- Does it look cheap to have a homemade steering wheel cover?
- Could the steering wheel cover create any risk of an accident?
- I assume not, but legally speaking, can the steering wheel cover be used against me in an insurance fight of responsibility in an accident?
Any advice from someone who has used a yarn steering wheel cover would be much appreciated.

Do definately. Probably depends on how tght it is and what type of yarn.

What hook size would you recommend? I’m going to be using acrylic yarn.

I think its a DO, but make it tight. You dont want the cover sliding around because that might be a risk at an accident

it’d look cool, but the thing is im pretty sure it’d be a danger hazard-
this is from something I googled:
“ Don’t decorate your steering wheel , the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The traffic safety administration said that drivers with such decorations on their steering wheels should remove them.”

This is an extremely dangerous idea, do not do this. Yarn will wear and stretch with time no matter what type, this can cause slippage, poor grip on steering wheel and thus car accidents.
As someone who is permanently disabled from being a passanger in a car accident, car safety is a bit of an interest for me.

Also as for your 4th question, yes. I was in a legal battle due to my car accident and they looked at all potential causes of the accident and lawyers are literally ruthless.

as a wheel cover user I’ll say these:
-
use acrylic cause it grabs better, depending on wheel size (european - 6 granny squares should do ) I sc all around the sides to bring the peace together 2 to 3 rows & use some elastic thread with a running stitch to bring more tightness .
-
if you are a wheel grabber you wont have any problems with it. acrylic in general doesnt slide much but if you just touch the cover and expect not to have trouble just dont
-
i also use a normal cover underneath my yarn one cause it just makes my wheel bulkier but thats my preference.
-
if homemade steering wheel cover is what you want you should really care if it looks cheap to others on not lel
lastly i dont know about any legal or illegal reasons for it so cant help there

Also it can get hooked on rings, buttons, braclets, hand and arm braces due to the “hole-y” nature of yarn steering wheel covers. This can cause your hand to get stuck, distraction and again car accidents.

Check with your department of motor vehicles. It may be against the law in your area

i dont think you should. it seems like a bad idea. Yarn can easily loosen and your hands could slip, leaving possibility for an accident. I recommend you don’t do it.
