Table runner

I’m wanting to make a table runner. Would this yarn be ok to use? I’m not sure if I need 100% cotton or if this will work.

Acrylic would be okay, but you may find that this particular yarn is a bit too bulky for a table runner. Maybe do a swatch and see what you think.

if it is a “nice” table or an antique, you will need a soft and natural fiber like bamboo or cotton to protect the finish, otherwise there is nothing wrong with acrylic yarn.
Whether or not this will work will depend on the pattern and what weight yarn is called for, or if you are experienced enough to alter the gauge to suit a thicker yarn.

What kind of yarn would be best? The video I watched for this pattern didn’t say the kind of yarn. Just gave the brand and hook size they used.

on the band of the yarn will be a hook size recommendation, there are charts that will tell you what weight yarn you need for what size hook and vice-versa
It isn’t the “type” (material) that will be the issue, it will be the “weight” which is also on the label … it will be the number in the ball band of the skein icon usually 1-6 Most lacy tablecloths are done in 1 or 2 weight yarn, but there are plenty of styles that are done in thicker. I hope that helps

What brand of yarn did they use? And what hook? I think acrylic will be fine as long as you don’t plan on having anything too hot be on it

This is the yarn from the video

When I search that yarn I get this

Weight: Sport | 5 Ply (so a weight 2)

Recommend hook size: 2 mm. to 4 mm. (US G)

With the red heart yarn

Weight: Medium (4)

Recommend hook size: 5.5 mm, US - I/9

So for sure the yarn will be thicker but it should still work, if you want to use this yarn I would try it and see how it’s coming along with the recommended hook size, if you don’t like how it’s coming along perhaps to bunched together and not enough empty space I would go up a hook size and so forth until you get the space you want, hopefully this helps!

Acrylic would work fine I think, if the weight is ok for the pattern. Since it’s more lacy, the yarn might make it bigger and bulkier. I think a dk or sport weight might be better. Also acrylic can get pilling/little fuzzies which might make your project look not as nice, so maybe an anti-pill yarn would be better? Or a cotton or bamboo type yarn might be good as well. I’ve seen both at Joann’s but there’s more varieties of cotton and acrylic.

Good luck with your project!

the yarn in the video is #2 weight which is commonly called “sport” or “fine” in the US. The runner in the picture will be fine done in #4 but it will be bigger, like a blanket and will need more like a 5.5 or 6 mm hook. In fact this is a very basic stitch often used in baby blankets. You can always just do less stitches and make it the dimensions you want with larger stitches.

Thank you all so much! I’m trying to understand how the yarn differences and what is best for each project I want to do.

I just used bamboo yarn for my bralette and love how that yarn feels and looks
