Tapestry update and dowel question

I’ve mentioned previously about making a tapestry for my husband. I started in January and I put it off for a long time and now I’m trying to finish before his summer program ends. I think i did 17-18 rows yesterday and another 4-5 today already. So it’s moving a lot faster than it has been. About to start row 86 out of 150.

It’s about 18 inches wide and probably will be around 24 inches tall. I got some .5" by 36" wooden dowels today and my thought is to do a black border around the whole thing in DC or tc and then wrap that border around the dowels and sew in place to make it nice and taught to hang up and a chain at the top too.

I’m wondering if that will be enough or if I should also try to block it? Since I did carry a lot at the beginning it has some wave to it (mostly the mouth area). I stopped doing that so it’s not so bad at the top but I’m thinking maybe blocking it will help and then attach to the dowels? Would love to get opinions from people who have done tapestries before!

Also best way you’ve found to block. It’s caron simply soft acrylic and I haven’t had much success in blocking this acrylic before but I’ve only tried a couple times

Here’s current progress with 13 strands of working yarn currently attached

Thanks! My husband wanted a 3d rayquaza but I couldn’t find a pattern I liked and I was too new to crochet to figure it out for myself… I started this as the second best option and now I’m like ā€˜wait, now I COULD make one instead’ xD Too late nowwwww. But he’s excited for it either way.

Rayquaza was my brother’s favorite Pokemon as a kid!

I would definitely block it if you can! It will help with those slightly wavy/wonky edges (my perfectionist in me is making an appearance).

Steam blocking helps a lot to get spots to lay flat and straight (and get starch spray to stiffen it - not necessary, but a good bonus I guess).

For my tapestry (13ā€ tall, 28.75ā€ wide), I pinned it to cardboard (I don’t have fancy tools) - stretching and fixing its shape, used the starch spray, then steamed it! I let it dry for 3-4 days before adding the wooden dowel and hanging chain!

Can you wash it in the washer before it’s hung?; or are there 100000 ends?

I’ve been weaving in as I go and carrying where it’s not too far so not too many ends but still a lot so I figured I might just use the sink and dunk it in cold water? I dunno though

That’s so cool! Not only is it big, but also it’s a really complicated pattern!! It looks so good so far:grin:

I like the method you plan on for the dowels! I never thought of that. Its coming along great :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: looks so clean, the edges arent even that bad. I’m sure it’ll even out with some sort of blocking and the dowels along the edge. Sorry i dont have advice

Ok follow up so I can stay motivated to finish this. 90/150 completed. 60 rows to go in 8 days. Got quite a bit done this weekend which will help since I have work the next 5 days. Eep.

Reached my limit tonight. 106/150 completed. Thankfully work was rather slow today so I got to crochet in between. 16 rows total today so I’ll take it! Should mean that if work is bad the next few days, I’ll still make it on time :tada:
